As capital of the Virgin Lands Territory (Tselinny Kray) agricultural project, the city experienced a tremendous growth in population.
After Kazakhstan gained its independence, the city and the region were renamed (1991) Aqmola.
In 1994, Aqmola was designated as the future capital of Kazakhstan, and after the capital was moved there in 1997 the city was again renamed (1998).

Astana   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
In December 1997, the President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbaev, decrees that the capital of the Republic should be moved from Almaty to Aqmola, a provincial town on the right bank of the Ishim River about a thousand kilometers to the north.
Although the decree does not sit well with the legislators and the commercial magnates--they have comfortably centered their private and professional lives on Almaty--Nazarbaev pushes for the change.
Aqmola is a compound of ak, the Kazakh word for "white," and mola, meaning "grave." The name can be literally translated as "White Grave," not a desired name for a burgeoning capital city of the future.

The cities name was again changed in 1991 to Aqmola, when Kazakstan gained it's freedom.
Because the name Aqmola sounded too much like "White Grave", Nazarbayev changed the name to Astana (literally "Capital") in 1998.
Due to it's location in Northern Kazakstan, there is speculation, that has been officially denied, that the reason for the move of the capital to the north is to exert a more Kazak influence on the more russified Northern Kazakstan.
