 Aqua: My Take on Mac OS X's Interface
A quick aside: Mac OS X is a complete rewrite of the Macintosh operating system which (finally) provides heavy-duty features like pre-emptive multitasking and protected memory, thereby making it a lot more stable and responsive.
In the current Mac OS, you occasionally want to hide windows that are obscuring things on the desktop, but with the dock and the new Finder, there isn't much reason to put things on the desktop.
Mac OS X has a new Finder, which Apple claims is much improved.

Aqua is certainly the nicest looking interface I have seen, and it makes Windows look like the ugly stacks of grey rectangles that it is. Aqua is vaguely reminiscent of the original Macintosh interface.
In Mac OS 9, Sherlock’s feature set is adequate for my needs, although regular expression and Boolean searching would be nice, but I rarely use it because of its speed (or lack thereof).
Making their custom interface elements fit with the Aqua look may be especially difficult, because it is so much more complex than knowing which shade of grey to make buttons and which size font to use.

Mac OS X can get confused and when designating Startup Disk privileges to Mac OS 9.1, and when Mac OS 9.1 boots, it may get confused and mess with OS X. Basically, you eventually get a huge mess and have to reformat your drive.
An advantage of using UFS is that Mac OS 9.x won’t mount the partition as a volume on the desktop.
An advantage to use HFS+ is that the Mac OS can see the drive, mount it on the desktop, and boot to it after selecting it in the Startup Disk control panel.
