In the News (Mon 28 May 12)

  The Aquabats - Nitro Records!
Except for the time when The Aquabats stormed the offices of Geffen Records, fully costumed (rubber helmets, masks, and matching rash guards with the letter ‘A’ emblazoned across their chests) armed with a copy of their first demos, demanding to see David Geffen.
Every show expanded Aquabat mythology and instead of treating fans as passive participants, they were encouraged to be a part of the show.
While The Aquabats’ genesis occurred during the Orange County Ska explosion of the mid ‘90s, they never set out to be a ‘ska’ band (they barely set out to be a band), rather they pulled from early ‘80s influences such as Devo, Oingo Boingo, and early L.A. punk bands.

Aquabats also have slim air bladders beneath their skin, which help them float, or sink, depending on to what degree they are inflated.
Young aquabats sometimes leave their birth pack to join a mate in theirs, but the more common scenario is for two young aquabats to meet, mate, and then move on, with the female and her pack raising the young.
Some aquabats are more monogamous, and more likely to switch packs, while others are quite polygamous, and against committment to a mate and his or her pack.

The features of the set include 2 discs complete with an entire live show recorded in 2003, some videos, the history of the aquabats and another disc conatining random live clips from over the years including the odd clip of the days when Blink-182's Travis Barker was in the band.

In the same way that their mentors Devo and Oingo Boingo had been pigeonholed into new wave, the Aquabats were clearly outcasts in Rudeboy land.
The above comparison to Oingo Boingo is not far-fetched, considering the Aquabats' conscientious use of horns, synths and outlandish vocal tricks.
Track after track, the Aquabats push the creative envelope, constantly outdoing themselves in the realms of complex production and arrangement, to say nothing of impressive virtuoso performances all around.

While the band's second release, 1997's The Fury of the Aquabats garnered decent sales (again, thanks to that year's ska revival), their debut album, Return of the Aquabats, has been largely ignored many more casual fans of the band, and can be a tough find at record stores.
For those who might be wondering exactly what the Aquabats deal is, they basically dress up as superheroes and defend 'the kids' from various evil doers and monsters.
On Aquabat March, the keyboards especially remind me of something Devo-esque, while much of the ridiculous CD Repo Man is a mishmashing of the Aquabats upbeat ska style with Devo's new wave tones.
