 SCREEN IT! PARENTAL REVIEW: AQUAMARINE
Hailey and Claire find Aquamarine hiding in a building and the latter is happy that she now has a butt and legs (transformed from her mermaid tail) that she turns to show the girls.
We see Aquamarine in a bubble bath (but don't see anything explicit), with Hailey's legs sticking over the edge to stand in for Aquamarine's (since she has a tail in the bathtub and they can't let Raymond, who's inadvertently walked in with Claire, see that she's a mermaid).
Aquamarine joins Raymond on his surfboard type flotation device and we see her bare back along with her long hair strategically placed over her presumably bare breasts.

Aquamarine - The Atlanta Journal-Constitution movie review | AccessAtlanta
Warning: If you're a male between 5 and 95, "Aquamarine," a junior chick flick about two pre-pubescent girls who find and befriend a mermaid, could make you green at the gills.
However, if you are now or ever have been a girl of 8 to 13, you'll be occasionally charmed by the giggly bonds of girlfriends and "guppie love" the film portrays — but also occasionally green at the gills.
Based on Alice Hoffman's popular book, "Aquamarine" (Sara Paxton) is a beautiful 18-year-old mermaid who washes up in the swimming pool of a Florida seaside resort after a storm.

 Review: Aquamarine - Cinematical
The film, directed by Elizabeth Allen and adapted from the book by Alice Hoffman, is a lot like Practical Magic, another book by the same author, which in 1998 was made into another completely forgettable film starring Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, and a seriously slumming Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing.
Aquamarine ends up helping the girls as well, as they learn from her what they've been trying to learn from a stack of teen magazines - how to live life to the fullest, overflow with genuine self-confidence, and make a cute boy fall head-over-heels for you in three days.
Aquamarine isn't as insultingly bad as some films aimed at this target market, but neither is it a film that's going to have any lasting impact (one hopes) on the future generation.

But Aquamarine isn't the only girl in Baybridge who's got her eye on Ryan: Spoiled Paris Hilton-wannabe Cecilia Stone (Arielle Kebbel), who runs with a posse of like-minded mean girls, is determined to reel in Ryan for herself.
On the one hand, the film celebrates the friendship between smart Claire and tomboyish Hailey, who are determinedly not like Cecilia and her crew.
And while Aquamarine appears sly and confident while in the water, once on land and in the vicinity of a dreamy boy, she becomes dizzy, dumb and totally at sea.

When Claire learns that Aquamarine can grant wishes, she casually asks, "Can you make boobs come out of hiding?" The line registers immediately as comedy, but a deeper scan—in light of the softness with which it's pitched and easily understood—reveals familiar feelings of inadequacy and frustration that trouble young girls.
The film's pinky, vibrant aesthetic is also in-and-out, and the script doesn't go far enough to differentiate Aquamarine's world from that of her new friends.
As for film's quaintly surprising finale, don't expect the self-absorbed satisfaction the Duffster contrives for herself in all her films.

Aquamarine (Sara Paxton) is a super-nubile mermaid who enters the lives of junior high-schoolers Hailey (Joanna Levesque) and Claire (Emma Roberts) in a Florida beachside resort town.
With great self-sacrifice, the pair decides to help Aquamarine in her romantic quest, while themselves coming to terms with their own problems with parents and personal insecurity.
Director Elizabeth Allen sets a nicely easy-breezy tone for Aquamarine, but her comic timing is sometimes shaky and she sadly cannot overcome the weaknesses of the script, which dwells too much on Aquamarine's often inane antics while giving short shrift to the development of Hailey and Claire, far more interesting characters.

 SCREEN IT! ARTISTIC REVIEW: AQUAMARINE
With the former aimed at adults and the latter at young kids, perhaps it's appropriate that the latest mermaid film, "Aquamarine" goes for the middle-ground, namely tween and young teenage girls.
That's because it's nothing more than a cute and occasionally amusing tale of two 13-year-olds, the mermaid they meet, and their attempts to get a hunky lifeguard to fall in love with the latter so that she'll grant a wish that prevents one girl from moving to Australia with her mother.
The latter is a one-note caricature and the young actress can't do much with it, but Paxton is likable enough in her role to offset some of the script and directorial problems.

If we are to follow the emotional heart of Aquamarine, a new film about two thirteen-year-olds who help a runaway mermaid fall in love, the answer isŠbling.
Aquamarine, as the half-human is called, telegraphs wide-eyed vacuity, and though she displays a few moments of comic inspiration while swinging her long blond hair (and long scaly tail), the film isn't particularly interested in her fish-out-of-water tale until very late in its going.
There are glimpses of what Hailey will be missing in her interactions with community life, but overall the film's depiction of an American seaside is as evocative as a visit to Wal-Mart's swimsuit display.
