Aquarium Rescue Unit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Aquarium Rescue Unit is a jam band, originally founded as a backup band for Col.
Formed in Atlanta, Georgia, the Aquarium Rescue Unit, with its constantly changing lineup, was a cornerstone member of the early jam band scene, with players that eventually became members of the Allman Brothers Band, Phil Lesh and Friends, Leftover Salmon, and Frogwings.
Although the band was never commercially successful, the band's combination of bluegrass, rock, Latin, jazz, and impeccable chops became a template for future bands in the genre.

The units have a useful life of 10 years, operate across a range of conditions (-40°C to 40°C), and transmit for 24 to 48 hours.
In the U.S., offshore beacons are rescued by the Coast Guard, or on-shore beacons by local search and rescue services in Alaska.
The Air Force Rescue Coordination Center is charged with land based emergency signals, usually dispatching volunteer members from The United States Air Force Auxiliary Civil Air Patrol.

 DKS: Surviving many changes
ARU limited its tour dates after the recent decision of bassist and original member Oteil Burbridge to also play for the Allman Brothers Band.
The band began in 1989 as Colonel Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit, with Sipe on drums and Matt Monday on mandolin.
Oteil said the future of ARU is wide open and that his position with the Allman Brothers is permanent.

eorge Graham Reviews The Aquarium Rescue Unit's "The Calling"
The Aquarium Rescue Unit got its start in the early 1990s in Atlanta, when the group backed up the legendarily quirky vocalist and songwriter Col. Bruce Hampton, whose own career goes back to the 1960s group the Hampton Grease Band.
The remaining members of the Aquarium rescue Unit are Otiel's brother Kofi Burbridge on keyboards and woodwinds -- he was also a part of Frogwings -- and drummer Sean O'Rourke, who is Aquarium's newest member.
The Aquarium Rescue Unit, when they first emerged more than a decade ago, might have been considered either ahead of their time or something of a throwback to the jazz-rock fusion, art rock and Southern rock scenes.

Hittin' The Web with the Aquarium Rescue Unit
The Aquarium Rescue Unit is often thought of as Bruce Hampton's band, and we covered that aspect of the band in the last HTN.
This is a much better representation of the post-Hampton ARU than In A Perfect World, their first studio album without Bruce, and shows the band finding its own style.
Oteil was always a featured performer in the ARU, and his bass is the one unifying element in all versions of the band.

In a way, the original lineup of the Aquarium Rescue Unit laid plans for the jamband scene that could never be (or just haven't been) topped or necessarily fulfilled.
In the years since the Aquarium Rescue Unit helped establish some of the primary aspects of the jamband sound, there have been several arcs and subsequent backlashes.
The ARU were perhaps the first jamband to seriously attempt bluegrass.

Jam Cruise 3 To Feature Col. Bruce Hampton & Aquarium Rescue Unit Reunion
ARU released two albums on Capricorn Records, in 1991 and 1993, and embarked on the H.O.R.D.E festival during the summers of 1992 and 1993, where they met fellow musicians Phish, Widespread Panic, and Blues Traveler.
Col. Bruce and ARU would leave the spotlight as quickly as they came into it, but not before planting the seeds of a music community and culture that would someday thrive, under the radar, in clubs and theatres and festival grounds around the world.
A band before their time, ARU's sound is still as zany and fresh as ever, their songs are timeless, and their chops, well they haven't set down their instruments since the band split.

Aquarium Rescue Unit reunites with its daddy after a decade apart
Born out of 99-cent-cover-charge jam sessions with Hampton in late-'80s Atlanta, the definitive ARU (which more or less disbanded after the Colonel left the band in '94) spawned some of today's most relevant musical luminaries in regions of jazz, jam, rock and beyond.
Perhaps more so than any of his ARU mates, though, drummer Sipe has carried on Bruce's "out" — as in way out — philosophy with his many fusion-minded projects.

Rescue Unit's ever-rotating lineup became a fixture on the early jam band scene, eventually spawning members of the Allman Brothers Band, Phil Lesh and Friends, Leftover Salmon, and Frogwings.
Cross-pollination was frequent, with members of the Unit and other bands frequently guesting on-stage or in the studio with their tourmates (such as Blues Traveler frontman John Popper's multiple appearances on the Unit's studio debut, Mirrors of Embarrassment).
In 1997, Burbridge replaced the late Allen Woody as bassist in the Allman Brothers Band (Unit guitarist Jimmy Herring also briefly replaced founding ABB guitarist Dickey Betts in the summer of 2000).

 The Grease Factor: REVIEWS
Earlier this year, the Grease Factor finally solidified (sorry, couldn't resist) their lineup with Aquarium Rescue Unit drummer Jeff Sipe and bassist Derek Jones, Allman Brothers keyboardist Johnny Neel and renowned percussionist Count M'Butu (who has gigged with the likes of ARU, Phish, Blues Traveler and Parliament/Funkadelic) officially taking the stage with Theriot.
In fact, the band recorded a series of shows back in January and the resultant tapes are now in the editing process to be compiled into a live album for imminent release.
One of the most unique aspects of the expertise behind Grease Factor is that they perform every show as an impromptu act, sometimes even writing songs on stage and in the moment as they feel the energy of the crowd.

Bruce Hampton : Col. Bruce Hampton & the Aquarium Rescue Unit
Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit tell real-world, blue-collar tales in a guitar-dominated sonic environment with Jimmy Herring (guitar), Oteil Burbridge (bass, vocals), and Chuck Leavell (piano, organ) making notable contributions.
Highlights of the album include the groovy "Yield Not To Temptation," and the free form, improvisational "Quinius Thoth," but it is "Basically Frightened" which truly captures the essence of the band as a fun, eclectic, rocking good time.

While all this was happening, ARU caught the attention of The Allman Brothers Band.
By joining ABB, Oteil showed how versatile he really is. While in ARU and another band, Frogwings, Oteil weilded a 6 string basses with precision, and used his fingers to produce his almost tuba-like tone.

This paraphrase is based on a quote from an early Frank Zappa/Mothers album, most appropo as he’s one of the goddaddys of Fusion.
The Aquarium Rescue Unit, associated with the eclectic Southern quiz kid, the estimable Col. Bruce Hampton, is a Fusion outfit steps out on their own with a platter brimming over with a tasty, impassioned amalgam of Southern R&B, jazz, funky rock (a la Little Feat) and pop.
The ARU seem to be shooting for a fusion of Chick Corea’s (electric) Return To Forever and Little Feat with touches of Marshal Tucker Band, and for the most part they achieve it in an entertaining manner.
