Within the asterid II clade there is moderate (Olmstead et al.
2002) support for Aquifoliales as being sister to the rest, and then Asterales may be sister to Apiales + Dipsacales (e.g.
It seems a little odd that there is little evidence that the two taxa with epiphyllous inflorescences form a monophyletic clade - they also have fimbriate stipules, brochidodromous venation, absence of hairs, etc., in common.

Pennantiaceae are shown to be the sister group of Apiales, a placement never suggested before.
I have also been looking into the circumscription of Aquifoliales, now enlarged as to encompass Aquifoliaceae (incl.
The latter family earlier consisted of the single genus Cardiopteris, twining herbs from South East Asia and Malesia, but several genera with a traditional placement in Icacinaceae are now shown to belong here.

Following up on previous indications that Icacinaceae were polyphyletic, the author cladistically analyzes morphological data plus sequence data from four genes to show that it is indeed so.
The former alliance includes the (African) type Icacina, and is thus referred to as "Icacinaceae sensu stricto," even though it is "probably…not…monophyletic." This alliance includes half of the genera of Icacinaceae s.
The other (Aquifoliales) alliance includes Citronella, Dendrobangia, Discophora, and perhaps Metteniusa, to account for the remainder of the Costa Rican contingent.
