AQUILA al-Hashimi, the Iraqi Governing Council member who died of gunshot wounds yesterday after an ambush outside her home, was cheerfully optimistic about her country’s future - although defiantly opposed to allowing foreign occupiers to remain on her country’s soil.
In her mid-40s, Ms Hashimi was in charge of the Iraqi foreign ministry’s UN department and was a member of Saddam’s outlawed Baath Party.
Ms Hashimi was a technocrat, and she said in the interview that she envisaged the Governing Council merely as a group of Iraqis who would work with the US-led Coalition Provisional Authority and the UN to draw up a constitutional assembly and organise elections.
