	Creating a global knowledge network
		The arXiv is an example of a service created by a group of specialists for their own use: when researchers or professionals create such services, the results often differ markedly from the services provided by publishers and libraries.
		As argued by Odlyzko [2], the current methodology of research dissemination and validation is premised on a paper medium that was difficult to produce, difficult to distribute, difficult to archive, and difficult to duplicate -- a medium that hence required numerous local redistribution points in the form of research libraries.
		An overview of the growth of the arXiv can be found in the monthly submission statistics, showing the number of submissions received during each month since the inception of service in August 1991.

	ArXiv - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		The arXiv was originally developed by Paul Ginsparg and started in 1991 as an archive for preprints in physics and later expanded to include mathematics, computer science, nonlinear science and, most recently, quantitative biology.
		Although the arXiv is not peer-reviewed, an "endorsement" system was introduced in January 2004 as part of an effort to ensure content that is relevant and of interest to current research in the specified disciplines.
		A well-known example of the latter is a potential proof of Thurston's geometrization conjecture, including the Poincaré conjecture as a particular case, uploaded by Grigori Perelman in November 2002.

	Life on the lattice: arXiv trackback controversy
		It gets rejected, and since the arXiv trackback policy is sort of secret at that point, Peter feels justified to complain about censorship by string theorists on his blog.
		It turns out that the arXiv trackback policy is to allow trackbacks only from currently active researchers (as judged by the number of their papers on the arXiv).
		The arXiv "active researcher" standard was not first revealed by Jacques on his blog, but in the comment section of another blog, Cosmic Variance, by Ethan Vishniac of the arXiv advisory board.

		Recall that arXiv trackbacks to this blog have been banned on the grounds that I’m not an “active researcher” (for more about this, go here).
		None of this makes any sense to me, so I tried politely writing to the arXiv person at Cornell that my logs showed had examined my blog entry just before their trackback system generated a trackback to it, asking about what was going on.
		Re Bogdanov and oddball papers showing up in arXiv: the problem is to figure out if there’s more at work than just the Recency Illusion and its cousin, the Frequency Illusion (see here for a discussion in the context of linguistics).

	OpenArXiv Relational DB Schema
		The main goal of this database is to track the relationships between publications, authors, and the various categories ArXiv uses for classification.
		Having a separate attribute for archive might be redundant, but for the time being it addresses those strange cases in ArXiv where you find a hep-lat article entered under hep-th instead of hep-lat.
		Citing and cited are both formatted identically to pubid from the publications table, but are still varchar variables and not their own separate data type.

		In this case, the technology of the 21st century would allow the traditional players from a century ago, namely the professional societies and institutional libraries, to return to their dominant role in support of the research enterprise.
		The arXiv [6] is an automated distribution system for research articles, without the editorial operations associated to peer review.

	E-Prints Intersect the Digital Library
		The e-print arXiv at the Los Alamos National Laboratory acts as a repository for electronic versions of papers in physics and mathematics, providing a rapid and convenient way for scientists to rapidly share their results with colleagues.

		For instance, LaViolette says that Bethe supported his attempt of upload, and I can see the logic of it: even if the theory is wrong, he strongly suggest that any experiment to measure the Pionner effect should try to distinguish between blueshifting of the signal and real acceleration measured with some positioning system.
		Some of the fllisted are charging that because of a history of previous controversial/speculative work, their mainstream papers are being rejected.
		If arXiv has a policy which prevents violators from being accepted any time after the transgression, that's okay...but it doesn't seem that that's what the case is.

	STLQ: arXiv Archives
		An analysis of 2,765 articles published in four math journals from 1997 to 2005 indicated that articles deposited in the arXiv received 35% more citations on average than non-deposited articles (an advantage of about 1.1 citations per article), and that this difference was most pronounced for highly-cited articles.
		Yet in spite of their citation advantage, arXiv-deposited articles received 23% fewer downloads from the publisher's website (about 10 fewer downloads per article) in all but the most recent two years after publication.
