As a far southern constellation, Ara is today almost invisible from Europe at any time of the year.
Some of Ara's stars are very distant: both Gamma Arae and Theta Arae lie more than 1,000 light years away, but both of these stars are brilliant supergiants, and so are clearly visible to the naked eye of an observer on Earth.
Gamma Arae is a fixed binary with rather faint companion: 3.5, 10; PA 328, separation 18".

This constellation was one of Ptolemy's original 48 constellations.

Ara, the Altar, appears amongst the 48 constellations of Ptolemy as the tripod censer, having seven stars.
This relatively faint and little known constellation, sometimes visualised as the altar on which Centaurus the Centaur, was about to sacrifice Lupus, the Wolf, or the Altar of the Gods, lies immediately south of Scorpius' tail.
Telescopium is to the south of Corona Australis, that is towards the pole, while Ara is to the west of Telescopium.

A small constellation of the southern hemisphere streching itself from DECL=55 degrees to DECL=68 degrees and from RA=18h 10m to RA=16h 35m (rough estimate; for the true boundaries refer to Catalog of Constellation Boundary Data).
According to The Night Sky by Ian Ridpath the Greek thought this constellation was forming the altar on which Centaurus sacrifies the wolf, Lupus.

Beta Arae, an orange class K (K3) supergiant (one on the faint side) at a distance of just about 600 light years, shows us how easily it is to be fooled.
More to the point, ground-based observations of Beta and Gamma Arae, the latter lying not quite a degree to the south of Beta, suggested that the two were moving through space together and might actually be an ultra-wide double star.
More interesting perhaps is that Beta Arae is a rather unusual "super metal-rich" star, with an iron content over three times that of the Sun.
