Arab Peace Initiative - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Arab Peace Initiative was floated by acting Saudi regent Crown Prince Abdullah as a potential solution to both the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the Arab-Israeli conflict.
It was published on March 28, 2002, during the meeting of the Arab League at the Beirut Summit, and achieved the unanimous consent of all members of the Arab League.
However, as of January 30, 2004, it appeared that the Saudis were preparing a supplementary initiative in preparation for the next Arab League summit meeting.

Diplomats said the adjusted proposal reaffirms the Arab commitment to peace with Israel in return for the land Arabs lost to the Jewish state in the 1967 Middle East war.
Arab diplomats said Jordanian Foreign Minister Hani al-Mulqi came under immense pressure from his counterparts to amend the earlier proposal, which had dropped specific references to Israel's return of land as part of full normalization with Arab states.
Nine of the Arab League's 22 members had expressed reservations about the initial draft, and the Jordanian and Palestinian foreign ministers were asked to rewrite the proposal.

Arab leaders meeting for the summit in Algiers are set to endorse a resolution to revive their three-year-old Arab peace initiative.
After their historic initiative gained only a lukewarm reception from Israelis and the international community, Arab leaders rightly decided that it was time to revisit the issue and perhaps recast the ideas in a different light.
Arab states have revoiced their commitment to peace and normalization in exchange for the return of land, Palestinian independence and a just solution to the plight of Palestinian refugees.

The Israeli people must be made to realize that the Arab initiative represents a serious attempt by the Arab leaders to influence a change in the direction of the current situation from an open conflict to a political process in which violence — and the radicals inciting violence — are pushed aside.
It is a concept and not a peace plan, but it states the will, the principles and the major objectives for peace and leaves to third parties the task of coming up with an initial framework and calendar for the peace process.
Fifth, the initiative presents a flexible, realistic, and political approach to the concerns expressed by all the parties — Israel, Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon— leaving the necessary space and flexibility to resolve their differences on all major issues such as Jerusalem, borders, and the right of return.
