spider consulting   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
If the spider is fairly unique in some of its other general features (color etc.), arachnologists can often arrive at a very good guess as to the spider you have.
It is worth clarifying two important points, First, arachnologists are not medical doctors, or, more specifically, dermatologists, and have no formal training in identifying various skin conditions as spider bites or otherwise.
Second, medical doctors are not trained arachnologists nor entomologists and may not have intimate knowledge (or personal experience) about what a spider bite may look like or what sort of spider did the biting.

  The Statesman
Many of the new species, which were found in a survey of an area of Western Australia roughly the size of England and Wales, are believed to be millions of years old, providing arachnologists with a unique window on the progress of evolution.
Australian spiders are especially interesting to arachnologists because the continent’s physical isolation from the rest of the world has resulted in an idiosyncratic natural history, with many invertebrate species dating back millions of years in their current form.
Arachnologists at the Perth museum are now beginning the painstaking business of describing each species in detail, to confirm that it is indeed new, and assigning them suitable names according to their characteristics and evolutionary history.

Entomology - Myth of the Brown Recluse
Arachnologists throughout the state including those at the Los Angeles County Museum and San Francisco's California Academy of Sciences (one of whom is probably one of the top 5 arachnologists in the world)
If the same percentages were true for California, patients would have already turned in hundreds of brown recluses to their doctors over the last decade and we would be able to easily find hundreds of recluses in the state.
I have polled California county entomologists, vector control personnel and arachnologists regarding the number of spiders that have been submitted to them by the California public and how many were brown recluses.

The receptivity shown by the South American arachnologists towards the I EACS revealed that the scientific maturity of the community demanded the continuation of the events.
The increase in the number of participants was due, mainly, to the increase in number of participating undergraduate and graduate students.
Between December 7 and 12, the IV EACS was held at the Colina Verde Hotel, in the city of São Pedro, interior of São Paulo, with the responsibility of maintaining the success of the previous editions.

They’re called arachnologists, and they’re never happier than when crawling across a patch of dirt in hot pursuit of the spider of the moment.
As many as eighty percent of Australian spiders are new to science, (as compared to north temperate zones, where most of the spider species have already been described).
In November, 1998 (spring in the Southern Hemisphere, four arachnologists bounced across a thousand miles of the deserts and beaches of Western Australia.

 Uniqueness Of The Collection
The collection serves as a depository for primary type specimens for several western institutions and as the main resource for material from all faunal regions that is convenient for western researchers to visit routinely.
Locally, it serves as the main worldwide research resource for entomologists and arachnologists in the scientific community of northern California.
With the possible exception of primary type specimens, it is probably inaccurate to describe any particular taxonomic or geographical holdings in one collection as truly "unique" within the international, or even national, community of collections.

Cushing is also a curator of invertebrate zoology at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, which allows her to share her passion with scientists, teachers, students, artists, and the rest of us.

Many names of the herein described species are still valid and are commonly used by every arachnologist.
Numerous arachnologists followed and worked at the Senckenberg museum, published on Senckenberg material or deposited their collection in Senckenberg: among others Carl Koch, Philipp Bertkau (‚Spinnen aus der Rheinprovinz’), Reginald Innes Pocock (Kükenthal’s collections from the Moluccas), W. Dönitz, Wilhelm Bösenberg und Embrik Strand (Spiders from Japan).
The unique legacy of the arachnologist Hermann Wiehle, which is well-known to most arachnologists through his accurate drawings in the series "Tierwelt Deutschlands", could also be preserved in the Senckenberg for the future.

Only arachnologists have the highly specialized skills needed to identify spiders, which take years of concentrated study to learn.
To be sure, a few entomologists (insect specialists) and a very small number of physicians are also arachnologists, but the vast majority are not.
Most pest control operators have very inadequate training even in the identification of common pest insects; few are trained entomologists, and I know of only one in the United States who is an arachnologist.

Except for the rare and uniquely colored spider, coloration is one of the least useful, diagnostic characteristics that arachnologists use when trying to properly identify a spider.

Background -First Latin American Arachnology Congress
In South America, prestigious arachnologists as Holmberg, Schiapelli and Geschman in Argentina, Mello-Leitao in Brazil and San Martín in Uruguay, were pioneers in the knowledge of our fauna, with emphasis on the systematics of our species.
After the 70’s, the number of investigators slowly increased, accelerating in the 80’s and finally consolidating in the 90’s, reaching the number of young investigators needed for new challenges.
During those three events, an increasing number of prestigious arachnologists from all over the world participated, as well as a investigators from other Latin American countries as Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Equator, Mexico, and Peru.

Representatives of the class Arachnida, spiders are found worldwide with about 35,000 known species (4,000 in North America), but less than one percent are dangerous to humans.
Even with such impressive numbers, it is estimated that only 20 percent of the spiders of Australia are scientifically catalogued and some arachnologists estimate there may be as many as 170,000 undescribed species worldwide.
As insectivores, spiders are valuable to farmers, feeding regularly on agricultural pests.

This was the only day on which all three arachnologists worked together; for the remainder of the expedition, TK sought different habitats from RLC and KYE.
The arachnologists climbed the hills on either side of the river mouth, RLC taking the southern and KYE the northern hill.
RLC was the only arachnologist collecting this half-day, and was dropped off at a Sphagnum bog south of Lake Aliger on the west shore of the island, just inland from the dune belt.
