Arachnophobia (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arachnophobia was an American horror and comedy film released in 1990 directed by Frank Marshall and starring John Goodman and Jeff Daniels.
The film is about a small California town invaded by the cross breed of local spiders and a deadly South American spider from the Venezuelan Amazon that was brought into the United States through the inside of the coffin of one of its victims, a dead nature photographer.
The film focusses on a physician named Ross Jennings, who is new to the town and faces a lack of patients due to an elderly rival.

Arachnophobia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arachnophobia is the fear (or phobia) of spiders.
Arachnophobia is, in many cases, the result of a traumatizing encounter with spiders in one's early childhood, though the experience may not be remembered.
The main phobias, such as arachnophobia, fear of snakes or mice, claustrophobia, stand out by their prevalence because they would have given over thousands of years a survival edge to sufferers and their offspring.

 DVDFILE.COM: Arachnophobia review
The film has a certain B-movie feel to it and the larger budget and talented cast that Amblin brought together make it the picture that it is. The story is fun, but not particularly strong.
For a film that is nearly ten years old the picture quality is not bad, but it is not up to par with the standard level of work that Buena Vista has shown us.
Arachnophobia is a dark picture that does have some rather nice daytime exterior shots, however, the best action and sights are in the dark.

Both films begin with death, which is misunderstood or ignored so that the rest of the disastrous events must transpire.
Arachnophobia makes liberal use of dramatic irony - near misses that are avoided by luck or chance, people almost getting bitten but moving out of the way in the nick of time.
You can find plenty of more Spielberg fingerprints in Arachnophobia, such as the rippled pattern of water marking the passing of the boat in the beginning and the later rush across the water as the coffin containing the bug and the body is flown back to America.

The film's opening moments picture an insect expert digging up and then tracking the travels of a poisonous male spider who has burrowed in the coffin of one of its victims from the Venezuelan jungle to California.
Film has many references to Hitchcock films, especially "The Birds," for its concentration on obsessed animals, and "Vertigo," with its main character's paralyzing phobia.

Whether or not "Arachnophobia" lifts you out of your seat in terror may have a lot to do with your attitude toward spiders before you walk into the theater.
Still, there seems to be a healthy chunk of the population with a primal fear of our eight-legged friends, and that may push this movie's pleasant mix of horror cliches and belly laughs into the big profit column.
The film opens with a prologue in Venezuela, with jungle and mountain vistas that seem too achingly beautiful to be real.

Arachnophobia is the feel-good eight-legged film of the 90's.
Arachnophobia billed itself as a horror/comedy mix, but was a tinge too light in either subject to get full course credit.
But really, Arachnophobia is the harmless sort of fun movie that you'll catch on some cable channel and end up watching to its finish despite any compelling reason to do so.

The film is certainly worth your time, and you'll be amazed with the amount of tricks the film crew was able to wrangle from their very real spider cast.
The film isn't meant to be taken seriously -- it's more like an easygoing romantic comedy masquerading under the guise of a horror flick, which probably explains the rather poor showing Lake Placid had at the box office.

 Classic-Horror Review of Arachnophobia (1990)
It does to me. But that's the hinge for this film, and takes up enough of the door that "genre fan" here necessarily means someone who doesn't mind their horror with a Steve Martin arrow through its head.
But the film's called Arachnophobia, and all of Atherton's dialogue sounds like a National Geographic special, delivered by Sands in his best "no-I'm-not-just-reading-a-biology-textbook-to-you" style, so we know it's not just going to be a comedy with Manley doing pratfalls down mountains.
Arachnophobia is not likely to go towards the top of your favorite films list, but it is an enjoyable way to kill a couple hours.

Mission accomplished, as I found "Arachnophobia" to be a fun-filled adventure with enough chills and thrills to satisfy most audiences.
The film contained all of the elements that Marshall had mastered under his mentor and partner Steven Spielberg.
