Arachnophobia (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arachnophobia was an American horror and comedy film released in 1990 directed by Frank Marshall and starring John Goodman and Jeff Daniels.
The film is about a small California town invaded by the cross breed of local spiders and a deadly South American spider from the Venezuelan Amazon that was brought into the United States through the inside of the coffin of a dead nature photographer.
Arachnophobia was the first release by Hollywood Pictures, the third filmmaking/distribution arm of the Walt Disney Company (after Touchstone Pictures and Walt Disney Pictures).

Whether or not "Arachnophobia" lifts you out of your seat in terror may have a lot to do with your attitude toward spiders before you walk into the theater.
Still, there seems to be a healthy chunk of the population with a primal fear of our eight-legged friends, and that may push this movie's pleasant mix of horror cliches and belly laughs into the big profit column.
The movie quotes familiar horror themes, such as the doll whose eyes mysteriously open as disaster is about to strike, without belaboring them.

Jeff Daniels played a good role as the main character who was...this was the only part of the movie that I felt was a little too plotted...afraid of spiders.
There is plenty of menace in the spiders' attacks, and Daniels' performance as the doctor paralyzed by arachnophobia is both funny and sympathetic all at once.
Arachnophobia really can't be categorized under horror, it wasn't a slash-n-gash blood-n-gore kind of horror, but very suspenseful and right when you thought one thing would happen, something else would and you'd find yourself saucer-eyed and tongue-tied with shock.

It is not a typical horror movie, in that it has a well-defined plot and follows through to a fairly logical conclusion.
I won't give all the details of the rest of the movie, but suffice it to say that the spiders continue to be problematic for the people in the town.
In many movies, pretty much as soon as the first actor opens his or her mouth it is apparent that the movie is not going to be very well-acted.

A horror movie based on roaches would be almost unbearable, and indeed I remember with revulsion an episode from George Romero's "Creepshow" in which a man was covered with a swarm of roaches and eaten alive.
Compared with such loathsome horrors, "Arachnophobia" is a relatively benign thriller, in which spiders kill a few people and scare a lot more, but never get really disgusting the way cockroaches would.
But the spiders in "Arachnophobia" are wonderfully photogenic, partly because the director, Frank Marshall, is good at placing them in the foreground, shooting them in closeup and allowing their shadows to cast alarming images when the characters aren't looking.

In horror movies, there are two types of people who have correctly identified the danger and are never believed by others: either a teenager (and not believed by parents due to youth and general insanity), or a fairly intelligent adult (and not believed by others due to a large web of idiotic plot setups).
Arachnophobia billed itself as a horror/comedy mix, but was a tinge too light in either subject to get full course credit.

Eight Legged Freaks (2002) - A Review by David Nusair
This being a giant spider movie, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that the influence of the toxic waste on the spiders is not exactly benign.
Arachnophobia, for example, had Jeff Daniels as the central character and he was someone we wanted to see win the battle over the spiders (it didn't hurt that he had to face his fear of the eight legged freaks).
But here, we get Arquette; his character is so poorly developed, by the time the movie's over, we don't know much more about him than we initially learn (he has a crush on the town sheriff and had a falling out with his father before he left).

When people today hear the word, "Arachnophobia", they think of a preposterous Hollywood movie, but arachnophobia is a very real, serious problem for many people.
However, it is consistent with the present thesis which argues that spider fear developed as a result of the association between spiders and disease in Europe after the tenth century." In other words, arachnophobia began as misplaced fear during the plague (having historical basis), then was passed down through European families adding a cultural basis.
Arachnophobia remains a large problem for people of European origin.

Arachnophobia” is billed as the first Thrill-omedy in film history.
The film preys on one of the most prevalent phobias known to man - the fear of spiders, but instead of being a gore fest or stomach-churner, it’s an old-fashioned, leap out of your seat, spill your popcorn and laugh flic.
In this movie, a race of deadly spiders get loose in a small town and start biting the townspeople at alarming rates.
