		The Arado Ar 234 Blitz was the world's first operational jet powered bomber, built by the Arado company in the closing stages of World War II.
		Arado was the only company to respond, offering their E.370 project.
		Arado estimated a maximum speed of 780 km/h (485 mph), an operating altitude of almost 11,000 m (36,000 ft), and a range of 2,000 km (1,250 miles).

		Both Arado and Henschel were asked for rear-loading designs powered by two BMW 801 engines, which was just entering prototype production and not currently used on any "front line" designs.
		Typical designs of the era would use a side-mounted door for access, but the 232 used hydralically powered clamshell-doors on the rear of the bay with a ramp to allow cargo to be rolled into the hold.

		The Ar 232 was designed as a general-purpose transport with multi-wheel landing gear for operation into the front-line airfields.
		BMW 801 engines were required more urgently for combat aircraft, such as the Focke Wulf Fw 190, and the third prototype introduced the powerplant of four BMW Bramo 323 radial engines on the leading edges of a center section of the wing.
		This basic configuration was retained for the 19 or so Ar 232B production aircraft that were completed for intensive service between 1942 and 1945.
