Arado Ar 240 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The Arado Ar 240 was a twin-engine multi-role heavy fighter aircraft developed for the Luftwaffe during World War II by Arado Flugzeugwerke.
The Ar 240 came about as the response to a 1938 request for a much more capable 2nd generation heavy fighter to replace the Messerschmitt Me 110, which was becoming outdated.
The Ar 240's excellent performance quickly led to the V3, V5 and V6 being stripped of their armament, including the defensive guns, and used as reconnaissance aircraft over England, where no other two-seater could venture by 1942.

Arado Ar 80 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Arado Ar 80 was a pre-World War II fighter aircraft design by Arado Flugzeugwerke, designed to compete for the Luftwaffe's first fighter contract.
Arado argued that the fitting of a constant-speed prop would boost both, with the speed climbing to 425 km/h (264 mph), but this was not attemped before the plane was sent off to the contest.
Although the Ar 80 had been one of the first planes to fly, the continued problems with the gear and engine supply meant it was one of the last to arrive for the head-to-head fly-off.

Arado Ar E.654 Luft '46 entry
The fuselage was very similar to the Ar 240 in appearance and construction, except it was widened to facilitate the two Daimler Benz DB 614 or DB 627 engines which were mounted side-by-side and inclined 15 degrees..
Unlike the Ar 240, the E.654 used a single vertical fin and rudder with the tailplane set at the top of the fin.
As had happened earlier with the Arado Ar E.561 project, the proposition was abandoned because of material and delivery problems with the drive shafts and because of the lack of interest of the Technical Bureau of the Luftwaffe in this type of drive.

 MPM's 1/48 Arado Ar 240
The Arado 240 was an original design submitted to the RLM in 1937 for a twin-engined heavy fighter-bomber, using streamlined gun turrets operated via remote control and aimed with periscopic sights.
Initially the Arado was intended for the dive bomber role, but lackluster performance in that section led to the re-assignment of the V 5 through V 8 (reconnaissance aircraft), V 9 (heavy fighter), and V-10 (night fighter).

THE GREAT PLANES Community - GOT: The Arado Ar 240
The Ar 240, although of conventional layout as center-wing aircraft with two engines in wing-mounted nacelles, those also homing the double-tire retractable undercarriage, was an extreme design (leader of the construction team: Wilhelm van Nes).
As a strong defensive armament was required externally, and Arado already had made considerations about remote-controlled turrets, such were chosen to become installed in a dorsal and a ventral position (in my eyes, the lower one had a very limited aiming area because of the long engine nacelles).
Only the fact that it would have been impossible to posess the Ar 240 in bigger numbers at the end of 1943, and the need to further avoid double work in the industry as it is until now, led to that decision.
