Arado Ar 234 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Arado Ar 234 Blitz (Lightning) was the world's first operational jet powered bomber, built by the Arado company in the closing stages of World War II.
Arado estimated a maximum speed of 780 km/h (485 mph), an operating altitude of almost 11,000 m (36,000 ft), and a range of 2,000 km (1,250 miles).
During the early 1950's the Ar 234 was moved to the Smitsonian's facility at Suitland, Maryland for storage, and eventual restoration.

Perhaps Arado's most celebrated aircraft of the war was the Ar 234, the first jet-powered bomber.

In the heavy offense fighter, the main competition were the Arado Ar 80, the Focke-Wulf Fw 159, the Heinkel He 112, and the Messerschmitt Bf 109.
The Ar 80 V3 was the first of the prototypes to be supplied with armament, which consisted of an engine-mounted 20-mm cannon firing through the spinner and two 7.62-mm machine guns in the cowling.

 ARADO Ar 555E
A discussion took place with the RLM several months later in early 1944, and Arado was asked to compile design studies for a long range jet powered bomber.
Since the requirements were high speed, a bomb load of at least 4000 kg (8818 lbs) and a range of 5000 km (3107 miles), it was realized that the project could best be fulfilled by using a flying wing design with a laminar high speed profile.
On December 28, 1944, Arado was ordered to cease all work on the E.555 series, probably due to the worsening war situation, and the need to concentrate aircraft development and production on fighters.

The plane was an ex-KG 76 Arado Ar 234 with the werknummer 140596.
It was established that it was not possible for the Ar 234 to leave the same way as it had come so it was decided to dismantle the aircraft and transport it by truck.

 Hasegawa 1/48 Ar-234 Blitz
Arado was instructed to equip the airplane with conventional landing gear, regardless of the effect on range due to reduction in fuel capacity, since the landing gear would have to be completely housed in the fuselage.
By the spring of 1944, an initial trials unit had been established, and the Ar-234 was successfully flown on photo-recon missions over England before the invasion; at the speed and altitude it flew it, the airplane was effectively immune to interception by piston-engined interceptors.
The only previously-available kits of the Arado Ar-234 that I know of were a 1/72 offering from Lindberg in the 1960s, a Japanese resin "garage kit" in the mid 1980s, and an injection-molded kit from Hobbycraft in the late 1980s which was unfortunately closer to 1/50 than 1/48 scale.

Despite the fact this airplane looked ungainly in comparison with the elegant Heinkel He-51 biplane, the Ar-68 was decidedly superior, the equal of any fighter biplane currently in service in 1935.
Unfortunately, Arado stuck to traditional designs at a time when a revolution was happening in aircraft development.
Unfortunately for Arado, the company was so deeply committed to license production of other companies' designs that AGO had to take over production of the Ar-96 until mid-1941, when production was shifted Avia in Czechoslovakia.

 Revell 1/72 Arado E.555
The Arado Ar E.555 started out in late 1943 as an all-wing project intended to meet the RLM requirement of a high speed jet bomber capable of carrying a bomb load of at least 4000 kg and with a range of 5000 km.
Basically it was a flying wing with a short, circular cross section forward fuselage with the crew of three housed in a pressurized cockpit and rear-facing weapon's station.
Besides, the Ar 555 was designed from the outset as a medium to high altitude bomber, not a low-level attack plane, and thus forward offensive firepower was probably not so important.
