Messerschmitt Bf 109 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In early 1933 both Heinkel and Arado had sent in privately-funded designs for a monoplane fighter, and the T-Amt simply collected the best features from both and sent them back out again, adding Focke-Wulf to the tender.
After a delay of several months, Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (Bavarian Aircraft Manufacturers, or BFW) for which Messerschmitt was head designer, was invited to take part in early 1935, although Milch let it be known that they would never win the contract.
However it was soon a front-runner in the contest, as the Arado and Focke-Wulf entries proved to be hopelessly outdated.

The only previously-available kits of the Arado Ar-234 that I know of were a 1/72 offering from Lindberg in the 1960s, a Japanese resin "garage kit" in the mid 1980s, and an injection-molded kit from Hobbycraft in the late 1980s which was unfortunately closer to 1/50 than 1/48 scale.

As late as the mid-1930s, despite the revolutionary changes taking place in aircraft development, the staffs responsible for choosing aircraft to operate at sea off aircraft carriers were very conservative, as manifested in their willingness to continue to develop biplanes even though their landbased counterparts were far more committed to the high-performance monoplane.

Just as Messerschmitt's Me 262 was the world's first turbojet fighter, so the Arado Ar 234 Blitz (lightning) was the first jet-powered bomber, although it was designed originally in response to a Reichsluftfahrtministerium requirement for a fast reconnaissance aircraft.
Total construction of the Arado Ar 234 amounted to 274 aircraft, of which 30 were prototypes and 244 production aircraft.

Despite the fact this airplane looked ungainly in comparison with the elegant Heinkel He-51 biplane, the Ar-68 was decidedly superior, the equal of any fighter biplane currently in service in 1935.
Unfortunately, Arado stuck to traditional designs at a time when a revolution was happening in aircraft development.
Unfortunately for Arado, the company was so deeply committed to license production of other companies' designs that AGO had to take over production of the Ar-96 until mid-1941, when production was shifted Avia in Czechoslovakia.

 Arado Ar 68
the Arado Ar 68 was ordered as a successor to the Heinkel He 51 which, during its brief service career, had acquired a somewhat unenviable reputation among pilots of the fledgeling Luftwaffe.
By comparison with the Arado Ar 65F that it had supplanted, the He 51 was certainly no docile hack for the inexperienced, and its low-speed characteristics were anything hut forgiving.
A single-bay biplane of unequal span and chord, the Ar 68 was largely the creation of the Arado Flugzeugwerke's chief designer, Ing Rethel, and the first prototype.

A number of early production He 177A-1s were delivered in July 1942 for operational trials with 1./KG 40 at Bordeaux-Merignac, but structural weaknesses in the wing necessitated substantial redesign, and the first of the modified He 177A-3s to see service with the Luftwaffe were delivered during the closing months of 1942.

The aircraft was still plagued by reliability problems of its powerplants; however, while the Junkers Jumo 004 engines were of the advanced axial-flow design, they suffered from a lack of high-quality strategic materials required during the manufacturing process, a result of the Allied bombing offensive and the turn of war fortunes for Germany.
The Me 262 was soon joined by other highly advanced aircraft designs, such as the Arado Ar 234 twin- and four-engine jet bomber/reconnaissance aircraft, the Heinkel He 162 single-engine jet fighter (powered by a BMW jet engine), the Messerschmitt Me 163 rocket fighter and others.
A variety of further highly advanced aircraft designs, such as the Horten Ho 229 flying wing (originally designated Horten Ho IX and later to be manufactured by the Gothaer Waggonfabrik aircraft factory), were either at the testing stage or even ordered into production by the time the war ended.
