Project ArAGATS is a collaborative research project organized under the auspices of the University of Chicago and the Armenian Institute for Archaeology.
This research has opened new opportunities for examining how the coemergence of the Achaemenid empire and the local Yervandid dynasty reordered social life and the sources of political authority in a region long home to processes of collapse and reformation, from the Late Bronze Age through the period of the Urartian Empire.
While previous investigations on the Achaemenid Caucasus have focused largely upon major centers, Project ArAGATS is focusing on the reverberations of these tectonic shifts in regional politics upon small-scale authorities and rural villages.
