	BANNER OF THE ARAHANTS
		The word Arahant, one who is Enlightened after hearing and practising the teachings of a Buddha, will be defined in more detail in Chapter Two.
		Most Arahants have been monks or nuns and the robes, which they wear, are their ‘banner’.
		The Banner of the Arahants (Arahantaketu in Pali language) is a sign of a person striving towards the Purity, Wisdom and Compassion of Enlightenment.

	Arahat
		A true arahant does not feel attracted to or repelled, by things seen (dittha), heard (suta), sensed (muta), or cognised (viññāta) and he is independent, not infatuated, and dwells with an open mind, and thus his mind is well freed with regard to the four conventions.
		The true arahant understands their nature as dependently originated, and he is detached from them, and all the latent biases that arise through attachment to them are destroyed in him.
		The mind of a true arahant is free from attachment, desire that is born of these sense spheres, the consciousness born thereof and the things that are known through the medium of this consciousness.

	Nibbana as Living Experience- two Studies from the Pali Canon
		Both the Buddha and the arahants are recognized as equal as far as the attainment of the final goal of Nibbana is concerned.
		In one place the Buddha states that in a group of 500 monks sixty are arahants with the six higher knowledges (cha.labhi~n~naa), sixty are arahants with the three clear knowledges (tevijjaa), another sixty are arahants liberated from both parts (ubhatobhaagavimutta), while the rest are arahants liberated by wisdom (pa~n~naavimutta).
		Though arahants with cha.labhi~n~naa are said to have the ability of thought-reading, nowhere is it stated in the Paali Canon that arahants can discern the spiritual propensities and maturity levels of the spiritual faculties of other individuals.

	Buddhist Saints: The Sixteen Arahants, Luohans, Arakan, Rakan
		The Sixteen Arahants are 'saints' or sages who have fully realized for themselves the Buddhist Doctrine, and have attained freedom from the cycle of suffering and rebirth.
		Only 16 Arahants are actually worshipped, and these are perhaps symbolic of the four Arahants that tradition assigns to each of the four cardinal points (materialized as a region of India or of China and as a special 'paradise').
		Thus, for example, the first of them, Pindola Bharadvaja, is said to reside with 1,000 of his disciples in Aparagodani, to the west; the second, Kanakavatsa, with 500 disciples, in Kashmir in the north; the tenth, Panthaka, with 1,300 disciples, in the Heaven of the 33 Gods.

	Is Theravada Buddhism for Arahantship Ony?

		A very interesting episode on record in proof this point is the story of the poet-monk Vangisa, who during his lay life had mastered the art of telling where a dead person was reborn by tapping on his skull with his finger-nails.
		When the skull of an Arahant was given to him by the Buddha himself he tried and tried but could not make his usual prediction because the Arahant was not reborn anywhere.
		This means that the Arahant's skull had undergone the transformation as explained earlier and thereby become a sacred relic.

	Overview of the Tipitaka
		Two other Councils of Arahants were held 100 and 236 years later respectively, again to rehearse the Word of the Buddha because attempts were being made to pollute the pure Teaching.
		About 83 B.C., during the reign of the pious Simhala King Vatta Gamani Abhaya, a Council of Arahants was held, and the Tipitaka was, for the first time in the history of Buddhism, committed to writing at Aluvihara in Ceylon.

	Is Theravada Buddhism For Arahantship Only
		According to Theravada Buddhist teachings, an arahant is a person who has reached the fourth and highest stage of enlightenment.

	Personality Differences of Arahants

		The story of the Magha Puja tells of a spontaneous pilgrimage of 1,250 fully enlightened monks (Arahants) to see Lord Buddha at the Grand Temple Veruvana in the city of Rajgarh during the full moon of Magha.

		Ajahn Mun is held in steem as an Arahant within the Kammatthana tradition he founded.
		He is also the most esteemed monk in the past 250 years in Thailand, so it might not be inaccurate to say that a large portion of the Buddhist community there acknowledges him as one.
		In my opinion, speculation as to whether he was an Arahant or not cannot produce any useful fruit, as no one, except those who knew directly from experience, will ever know.

	Rajgir
		With this retinue of one thousand Arahants, the Buddha entered Rajgir, where he was warmly received by Bimbisara, who became a lay follower and offered the famous Bamboo Garden (Veluvana), to the Buddha and the Sangha.
		When King Bimbisara heard that the Buddha had come to Rajgir with a retinue of one thousand Arahants, he went to the Sapling Grove to meet the Buddha and was converted by the Buddha, attaining the First Stage of Sainthood.

		Because the Arahant practiced the Theravadan way, he was not opened to the possibility of the precept or VOW that it is possible to return by choice (a very important point here “by choice”) to help others towards the goal of full enlightenment.
		I think he is just expanding on the Mahayana idea that an arahant can choose to be reborn if there is a request, and giving the example of the historical Buddha, who didn't get a request and so chose not to be reborn.
		After the "arahants" leave the gathering, the Buddha says, "Now the gathering is purified." The scene is meant to symbolize the (Mahayana) idea that not everyone is capable of receiving the higher truth.

	Karma
		The exception made in their case is because Buddhas and Arahants, by virtue of attaining their state of mindfullness, are delivered from both good and evil.
