 Arakan Forest Turtle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Arakan Forest Turtle (Heosemys depressa) is an extremely rare turtle species which lives only in the Arakan hills of western Myanmar.
The Arakan Forest Turtle was believed extinct (last seen in 1908), but in 1994 was rediscovered when a few specimens turned up in Asian food markets.
Like most Asian turtles, it is collected yearly as a food source or for "medical cures." Only a handful of these turtles are in captivity, and their status in the wild, which is dubious at best, is listed as critical.

There are only 2 other turtles currently in the genus Kachuga...so, which do you think it is? And #6 is an Acanthochelys.
The ironic part of this story is that the turtles were so underappreciated at the time that one f the importers actually GAVE me (yes, as in for FREE) about 6 of these turtles because he could not sell them, even for his own cost ($15.00 or thereabouts).
The carapace patter is very similar between the two, and one of the diagnostic characters of H. despressa is the dark wedges on the marginals and to some degree the costals.

Though the TSA was organized in direct response to the Asian Turtle Crisis, it has since evolved to address range country initiatives, with focused activities in India, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

The spring baby boom is happening in the World of Reptiles and includes a Malayan spiny turtle and a baker’s dozen of matamata turtles, with their bizarre fringed heads and snorkel-like snouts.
On April 4, the Zoo Atlanta Herpetology (reptiles and amphibians) department celebrated the hatching of an Arakan forest turtle, Heosemys depressa.
For nearly 100 years, Arakan turtles were thought to be extinct until several were discovered in the food markets of southern China.
