The captain introduces himself as Aral Vorkosigan, accepting her word that she won't try to escape, and then takes his two captors with him on the long march across the continent to a base camp he claims to know there.
Vorkosigan wants to contact some members of his ship, telling Cordelia that it was most likely a mutiny of his political officer that has left him stranded here.
Vorkosigan, Naismith and her injured lieutenant do their best to survive on their emergency rations, and despite Vorkosigan having been injured by some native wildlife, continue their way, covering miles after miles.

There are not very many changes: Aral is now in his Count Vorkosigan uniform, Mark is sitting besides Miles, "Piotr Miles" is not directly behind Miles (but has edged a bit toward Mark), and there is a new ghost (female) sitting on the other side of Cordelia.

Cordelia and her 'captor', who says he is Captain Aral Vorkosigan, have to make a journey 200kms across this unknown and, as it turns out, rather dangerous planet in order to find a cache of stores and a way for Vorkosigan to communicate with his ship.
Some of the characters in this story appear in the others, particularly Cordelia and Vorkosigan, and the book "Barrayar" is the direct sequel to this and deals further with Cordelia, Aral Vorkosigan and their son Miles (the rest of the books are mostly set 20-30 years after the events in this book).
Aral Vorkosigan is a deeply conflicted character, and through his own troubles we get an introduction to the conflicts and contradictions of Barrayar, which will shape so much of the life of Miles Vorkosigan.

Whilst Aral makes his way to a place where he can marshal his forces for the conflict to follow, Cordelia is sent on a whistle stop tour of the mountains that make up the majority of the Vorkosigan County.
Aral, thinking that a mission just to rescue his son whilst ignoring the other hostages would lose him more than having him safe would gain him, refuses to do anything.

By the end of the book, when we knew that Aral's position as Regent was secure, that his hand-picked men occupied all the significant positions of power, and that he and Cordelia were going to raise Gregor, all the danger of Barrayar itself was neutralized.

In "Shards of Honor," her crew was killed, and she was taken prisoner by Aral Vorkosigan, "The Butcher of Komarr." When she was released, and then recaptured in a later conflict, Vorkosigan rescued her and proposed to her, and she married him.
The heir she bore Vorkosigan was twisted and deformed from an assassination attempt during pregnancy.
