Aram Sargsian was born in 1949, in Yerevan, is a professional journalist.
Upon the invitation of "Komsomolskaya Pravda" newspaper Aram Sargsian resumed professional activities, working as the correspondent of this daily in Armenia for about 10 years, and since 1989 he became the correspondent of "Pravda" daily in Armenia.
In 1996 Aram Sargsian, jointly with the leaders of a number of opposition parties formed "National Consensus" Alliance, was registered as a candidate for RA presidency, and during the first stage defended the candidate of the Alliance.

Following the assassination in Parliament of Prime Minister Vazgen Sargsian and parliament Speaker Karen Demirchian and six other officials, on October 27, 1999, a period of political instability ensued during which an opposition headed by elements of the former Armenian National Movement government attempted unsuccessfully to force Kocharian to resign.
The Government of Armenia's stated aim is to build a Western-style parliamentary democracy as the basis of its form of government.
A new party, the Republic Party, is headed by ex-Prime Minister Aram Sargsian, brother of the late Vazgen Sargsian, and has become the primary voice of the opposition, which also includes the communists, the National Accord Party of Artashes Geghamian, and elements of the former Ter-Petrossian government.

The electoral Commission refused the candidature of Aram Raffi Ovannissian, a former American citizen living in Armenia for over ten years but who only obtained Armenian nationality in 2001; the Constitution obliges any person standing in a presidential election to have been a citizen for a minimum of ten years.

Armen Sargsian, brother of former prime ministers Vazgen and Aram Sargsian, was arrested late on 16 March on suspicion of involvement in the 28 December killing of Armenian National and Radio Director Tigran Naghdalian, ITAR-TASS reported the following day.
Aram Sargsian said in a 12 March interview with the opposition newspaper "Orran," which was cited by Groong, that if two of his distant relatives arrested on suspicion of involvement in Naghdalian's murder are guilty, they should be punished.
Aram Sargsian said he had no reason to wish Naghdalian dead, particularly as Naghdalian might have been in a position to shed light on the background to the October 1999 parliament shootings, of which Vazgen Sargsian was one of the eight victims.

The agreement reached 10 days ago by Armenian President Robert Kocharian and Prime Minister Aram Sargsian over the composition of the new cabinet defused tensions and ended speculation that the former would either resign or fire the latter.
