Aramac is a small town and Local Government Area in Western Queensland, Australia, lying 68 kilometres north of Barcaldine, and 1280 kilometres by road from the state capital, Brisbane.
It is situated on Aramac Creek, which flows into the Thompson River 60 km west of town.
Aramac, along with Muttaburra, are the two population centres of the Aramac Shire, population 900, area 23,000 square kilometres.

Located 67 km north of Barcaldine, Aramac is one of those tiny little settlements in central Queensland which has outlived its original purpose and now stands forlornly in the middle of nowhere supporting the surrounding pastoral industries and sustaining the few people who continue to live in this hot, dry environment.
In a letter he explained: 'The Aramac, as many wrong reasons for the name have been given, I may say here I named, in honour of the late Sir R. Mackenzie, 'Ar-Ar-Mac', who was so well known in Queensland, and who had acted in a very friendly way to me'.
In 1909 Aramac Shire Council, still isolated from the surrounding area, borrowed £66 500 and built a tramway connecting the town to the main railway line at Barcaldine.

The first race club at Aramac was formed in 1877 and was known as the Mitchell District Grass Fed Racing Club, apparently named after the explorer Sir Thomas Mitchell about 1855.

Ninety farmers in central Queensland's Aramac Shire can now apply to Centrelink for interim Australian Government drought support, the Australian Agriculture Minister, Warren Truss, announced today.
"The Queensland Government, and peak lobby group Agforce, took the Australian Government's comments on board, and requested that Aramac Shire be considered as an addendum to the Central Mid West EC area.
Farmers in the Central Mid West application area have been eligible for interim Australian Government drought assistance since 30 October 2003, and now those in Aramac Shire will also be eligible.

It was easy to access the point (only 8 gates to open and close) as all tracks and roads in the area (during dry times, which is most of the year) are accessible to 2 wheel drive vehicles.
The area is typical of the landscape surrounding Aramac in Western Queensland.
We arrived late (around 6:00pm) on the 14th of May to undertake some GPS work on an existing permanent survey mark about 1km away.
