Aramoana Beach - Port Chalmers District
Aramoana - "Pathway to the Sea" - is a quiet and peaceful seaside village situated 10 kilometres north of Port Chalmers at the mouth of the Otago Harbour.
To the Southwest side of the township extends expansive salt mudflats from the head of the Aramoana Spit around the harbourside to Te Naru.
The main channel of the Otago Harbour is kept clear by the Aramoana Mole, an artifical breakwater built in the early 1900s from rock brought in from a local quarry.

 Science and sensibility
The Aramoana tragedy was unlike anything we had ever experienced in our own country and I imagine the settlement of Aramoana will be associated with the events of that day for a long while yet.
Aramoana is a wonderful place, home not just to 260 people but to scores of wading birds, shags, penguins, seals, insects and most importantly no aluminium smelters.
Driving out to Aramoana you see almost every mooring post in the harbour is a sunning point for some shag or other, there are four species of shag commonly in the harbour and one of them (the Stewart Island Shag) has two colour morphs so their is a great deal of diversity.

Aramoana, also known as "The Spit" to locals, is a small coastal settlement, 27 kilometres north of Dunedin city, in the South Island of New Zealand.
In the 1950s the town became popular as a beach resort and a rural life village due to the construction of a mole, to inhibit the spread of tidal sands into the mouth of the Otago Harbour and was surveyed and amalgamated as a suburb of Port Chalmers bourogh.
To the southwestern side of the township extend expansive salty mudflats from the head of the Aramoana Spit around the habourside to the township of Te Naru.

Feature: The spirit of Aramoana by Philip Matthews | New Zealand Listener
The movie about the 1990 massacre that rocked New Zealand is a restrained, sad, moral tale of a small South Island beach community where everyone knew one another by their first names – even their killer.
The obvious question for someone with as strong an Australian accent as movie producer Tim White is whether he even remembers seeing or experiencing the Aramoana tragedy – the killing of 13 people in November 1990 by lone gunman David Gray – at the time.
But White had only been in Australia for a decade by then: he was born, raised and educated in New Zealand; he went to art school with Vincent Ward.
