Out of the Blue, directed by Robert Sarkies, is described as a "gripping" drama which recounts the tragedy, along with the tales of bravery and survival that went with Gray's rampage.

The director of a controversial movie about the 1990 Aramoana massacre is worried his film will be given a higher censor's rating because it is a New Zealand movie.
The movie has re-opened old wounds from the massacre with some locals feeling it was not an appropriate subject for the screen.
Director Robert Sarkies told the newspaper the movie was not suitable for children but it should still be available to as wide an audience as possible.

In response to the outcry following this massacre, a public inquiry was called which examined many aspects of firearms regulation in an international context.
Subsequently, a new law was passed which banned 95% of handguns and required that the remainder (.22 calibre pistols) be stored at gun clubs.
The National Committee on Violence recommended a series of measures related to firearms regulation in its 1990 report including registration of all firearms and the former Federal Justice Minister advocated a national system of gun registration as part of the crime prevention strategy announced in May of 1995.

The film "Out of the Blue" is about lone gunman David Gray's 23 hour siege in the small township near Dunedin, in which he killed 13 people before being shot dead by police.
The film's director, Robert Sarkies, says the movie has been selected in the Toronto Festival's "Discovery" section, where other New Zealand films "Whale Rider" and "In My Father's Den" premiered.
