Aran sweater - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Aran sweater, which takes its name from the Aran Islands, is a type of sweater popular in the fishing villages on and islands off the west coast of Ireland.
The sweater is usually sold as a "fisherman sweater", indicating that the sweater was traditionally used by the island's famous fishermen.
Again some doubt the idea that the sweater was used by fishermen and argue that the sweater, which is quite thick and stiff, would probably restrict the movements of a fisherman.

 The Aran Sweater
The Aran sweater, an emblem of both the Aran islands and, indeed, of Ireland itself, is a unique fusion of art and practicality.
The events from which the modern Aran arose from the ashes of earlier and less intricate designs are often debated, but it is reasonable to assume that at least one circumstance had a profound effect on the Aran's evolution.
Aran women had always been knitting fisherman’s jerseys, or 'ganseys', as islanders call them, to help their husbands and families weather the often-treacherous island conditions.

Aran Isle Sweaters - how a dropped stitch gave rise to a popular myth. - World Cultures European
The first Aran sweaters or geansaís (ganseys) as the islanders called them, made their debut on young island boys in the late 1920s and early 1930s.
The other difference between an authentic Aran and other intricately-knit sweaters is in the meaning of the stitches and the stitches themselves: The names of the traditional stitches write their own poem: flberry, diamond, honeycomb, moss, lobster claw, ladder, plait, bobble, link, basketweave, tree of life.
A few years later she visited the Aran Islands for the first time and through a friend, the artist Elizabeth Rivers, was put in touch with the local knitters and started to buy from them.

The Aran Islands lie on the most westerly edge of Europe across the mouth of Galway Bay.

 The Aran Sweater - Evolution
To understand the complexity of some of the early sweaters is to realise that they were often composed of horizontal lines of some 400 stitches in rough homespun wool in which 12 stitches or 20 rows made up roughly one inch.
Through her friend Elizabeth Rivers, an artist who had come to live on Inishmore in 1935 she was put in touch with the best knitters in the area, mostly in the west of the island, and started to buy from them.
In the richly detailed effects of this sweater, Kiewe perceived aesthetic links with early Celtic art which led to a misleading and persistent belief that the sweaters were centuries old.
