  Craters
IMPACT CRATERS, which occur almost everywhere on the Martian surface, are significant because the number of impact craters per unit area area gives an indication of the relative ages of different parts of the surface.
Crater densities low enough to suggest significantly higher rates of resurfacing are found only in the polar regions, around some volcanoes, and very locally in other areas.
The general surface layer of debris has been removed everywhere except around craters where ejecta have armored the surface against the wind, with the result that most craters are surrounded by a platform composed of remnants of the debris blanket.

Although buried by Yuty ejecta, a pre-Yuty crater close to the rim is clearly visible, indicating that the ejecta deposit is thin.
This crater is close to Kasei Vallis, the edge of which is marked by an escarpment in the northwest corner of the image.
A cluster of craters at the top of the frame strongly resembles a group of volcanic cones but is probably part of the impact crater continuum.

Chapter 6 - The Solar System
All ages and size of craters can be seen, ranging from fresh craters with sharply defined rims to older craters which have been filled by some free-flowing material, to the oldest craters where only a few segments of the rim remain visible through the cover of material and recent meteoroids.
In some of the older craters it is possible to observe that the rounded floor of the newly-formed crater has been gradually filled to form a flat plateau within the crater walls, and it is common for this material to be the same dark material as the Marias.
On the edge of the Kassi Vallis on the western side of Mars is an impact crater with a diameter of 18km.

Scientists think that the caldera-the crater formed by the collapse of the central part of the volcano-of a patera is the result of simultaneous lifting and collapsing of the sides of the volcano, probably repeated many times over a long period.
The impact melts the ground ice and lubricates the [ejecta] that is thrown out of the crater so when it lands on the ground it flows away from the crater in a debris flow and forms the characteristic features we have observed.
Craters on the moon and Mercury typically had a coarse, disordered texture close to the rim that became finer farther out, grading almost imperceptibly into dense fields of secondary craters.

The Arandas crater is more complex than the Meteor crater; it features a terraced rim, which is thought to have formed from the outward movement of “soft” terrain over millions of years.
Mars also contains many pit craters, which are craters that contain central, peak-like structures, which are thought to have formed from large peaks in existence before meteor impact.
Approximately 30% of all craters with central formations on the surface of Mars are pit craters.

Arandas, the 24.5-km-multilobate crater seen in this image, is located in the mottled terrain, a region near the martian north pole where craters are typically surrounded by bright halos of material.
To the right of the crater is an example of the polygonal terrain, the origin of which has been variously attributed to ice, volcanism, and tectonism.

Because of defects in some of the B-2 photos and an atmospheric haze that had obscured the surface, the interpreters were cautious in their estimates of the dunes in that zone.
Some felt that the B-2 craters and ejecta blocks, being smaller than those in B-3, were better covered by B-2's bigger dunes and that B-3's smaller dunes might not cover the ejecta from the larger craters there as well.
In the region of the crater Mie, it was hard to project what size blocks could be anticipated.
