Orb-weaver spider - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The orb-weaver spiders (family Araneidae) are the builders of spiral wheel-shaped webs often found in gardens, fields and forests.
The family is a large one, including over 2800 species in over 160 genera worldwide, making it the third largest family of spiders known (behind Salticidae and Linyphiidae).
Levi, H.W. The new orb-weaver genus Lewisepeira (Araneae: Araneidae).

 Spider Reproduction and Growth
In other cases, the male and female are so different that they may even appear to be different species where males of certain species mimic wasps or ants (Salticidae; Gnaphosidae; Seothyra, Eresidae).
The eggs are expelled from the epigastric furrow in a viscous liquid that dries when it comes into contact with air, cementing the eggs together.
With continual flexing, the spider emerges slowly, first its body from the top its old "skin", then the legs, clustered together, are slowly eased out of the sleeves of its old garment.

 Araneidae (orb-web spiders)
In South Africa the family Araneidae includes 30 genera of master weavers.
This is one of the families referred to as the orb-web spiders (another being, Tetragnathidae) although some genera do not spin orb webs.
The Araneidae (with another orb-web family, Tetragnathidae) occupy a niche not utilized by other spiders.

 Web Building Spiders
Two orb-weaving families, Araneidae and Tetragnathidae, were previously included in one family Araneidae, or in the older literature called Argiopidae.
Araneidae build orb webs with dense center while Tetragnathidae build orb webs with open centre.
The family name Araneidae is now preferred, in the older literature they are called Argiopidae, which included all orb web building spiders, which are now separated into other families.

Orb Web Weaver (Araneidae) Araneus - The lovely spiral webs produced by orb weavers are architectural wonders designed to extend the spider's sensory system, reduce the amount of silk used, and trap or slow down prey.
Elongate Long-jawed Spider (Tetragnathidae), The family Tetragnathidae is newly separated from the family Araneidae.
Unlike the spiders in Araneidae family which first wrap their prey in silk after capture and then bites it, spiders in family Tetragnathidae bite first and then wrap.

Garden Spiders, (or used to be referred to as Argiopidae(1), rather than Araneidae)
The common name comes from the web-spinning behavior of these spiders - they make the classic, round "orb" web that most people associate with spiders.
