Ararat (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ararat is a 2002 film by Atom Egoyan about the Armenian Genocide, an event that is denied to this day by the government of Turkey.
Ararat thus includes graphic sequences depicting the horrors of the genocide, but they are always framed as scenes from Saroyan's film-within-the-film.
Furthermore, the actors and filmmakers are shown discussing the ethical problems that arise when adaptating contentious subjects into simplistic movies; for example, Elias Koteas plays Ali, a Turkish-Canadian actor who becomes increasingly uncomfortable with playing the role of an evil Turkish military officer in Saroyan's film.

 The Battalion - 'Ararat'
Kouyomjian said this movie is important and she encourages history students in particular to see "Ararat" because the film raises the issue of the Armenian history that has been left out of the history books.
At the release, "Ararat" received mixed reactions ranging from "this movie was a masterpiece" to "this movie did not contribute anything to Armenian history." Some viewers thought the movie should have concentrated more on the genocide itself without bringing the other elements to the story, such as Raffi having a love affair with his stepsister.
She said the purpose of the movie was to show the history, and not to shock the audience with violent scenes.

Ararat is about a tragic historical event, a country in denial and a people yearning for the truth!
The film within Ararat recounts an almost forgotten and tragic event in history, the massacre and subsequent genocide of the Armenians in the year 1915.
Moreover, Ararat is certainly not the film to define the event in history despite its educational value.

Canadian-Armenian filmmaker Atom Egoyan reopens a bitter historical debate in "Ararat," using a film-within-a-film structure to examine the 1915 slaughter of Armenians in Ottoman Turkey and its effect on subsequent generations.
Yet "Ararat" is no dry history lesson -- it's a deeply personal look at what we choose to believe, how we grieve for the dead, and what truths we admit or deny about ourselves.
Written and directed by Egoyan, the movie takes its name from Mount Ararat, Turkey's highest summit, which is near the homeland of the slain Armenians.

The most virulent critiques with regard to the movie came from the Armenian community of Turkey, of which one of the representatives, a journalist, Hrant Dink, editor-in-chief of the Armenian language AGOS, which is the main Turco-Armenian communal newspaper, was present in Cannes.
This movie could easily be labeled a 'HATE CRIME SYLLABUS' shot in Canada, for the sole purpose of teaching everyone, including the innocent minds of the children of Canada and of the rest of the world, to begin to hate Turks.
Unfortunately, for the Armenians the Egoyan film, "ARARAT" is no longer in a position of doing that, because it has proven to be an unbelievable, dishonest story by the critics who saw it and passed their judgements on it.

SPLICEDwire | "Ararat" review (2002) Atom Egoyan, David Alpay, Arsinee Khanjian
Writer-director Atom Egoyan's heartfelt passion project "Ararat" is an abstractly structured account of both the 1915-1923 Armenian genocide at the hands of the Ottoman Turks and the massacre's emotional reverberation in the descendants of its survivors.
Another present day plot concerns the making of a movie about the massacre by a very dedicated director (Charles Aznavour) and screenwriter (Eric Bogosian), who hire Khanjian as a consultant when they decide to fold the story of Gorky's war-torn childhood into their plot.
There's far more intricacy to the connections in "Ararat" than I have stamina to describe here -- for instance Alpay's girlfriend (Marie-Josée Croze) is also his step-sister, who blames his mother (the art historian) for her own father's death and frequently harasses her at public appearances.

The objective and the importance of the movie cannot be understood without examining the environment from which it was born, because that environment was very sensitive.
