The Queensland Railways were not really deficient until exposed to the stress of the Pacific War between 1941 and 1945, when it became clear that their light standards were as inadequate for the defence of the country as they were for intense economic development.
Elsewhere in Australia, as in Victoria, railway unionism was not that significant a factor in the changing landscape of late colonial and early federal politics.

The line was later extended south-east, to Winchelsea in 1876, Colac in 1877, Camperdown in 1883, Terang in 1877 and Warrnambool and Dennington and Port Fairy in 1890.
Branch lines also followed, from South Geelong to Queenscliff in 1879, both Moriac (between Geelong and Winchelsea) to Wensleydale and Terang to Mortlake in 1890, Birregurra (between Winchelsea and Colac) to Forrest in 1891, Camperdown to Timboon in 1892, Irrewarra (east of Colac) to Cressy in 1910, and Colac to Alvie in 1923.
The branch lines begun to be cut back from the late 1940s, the Wensleydale line being the first in 1948, followed by the Forrest line in 1957, the Irrewarra line in 1953, the Alvie line in 1954, the Beech Forest line in 1962, and the Timboon line in 1988.

The Mildura line was opened from Ballarat to Creswick, Clunes, Maryborough and Dunolly in 1874 and 1875, and extended to St Arnaud in 1878, Donald in 1882, Birchip in 1893, Woomelang in 1899, Ouyen, Red Cliffs and Mildura in 1903, Merbein in 1910 and Yelta in 1925.

The Ararat railway line is a regional railway in Victoria, Australia.
Prior to conversion to standard gauge of the line from Ararat through to Adelaide as part of the One Nation Program, the Ararat railway line formed part of the main interstate line between Melbourne and Adelaide, carrying The Overland services to Adelaide as well as V/Line services to Horsham and Dimboola.
[1] In 1995, the main interstate line was rerouted via North Shore and Maroona and the broad gauge line between Ballarat and Ararat was closed to all traffic.

The construction of a grand trunk line of railway, stretching from Geelong to Colac and Camperdown, thence to Hamilton, and then on to the south Australian border, was what has become familiarly known as the ‘fl line’ of railway.
The line was to have been completed by 30 June 1882, but repeated delays arose through the inability of the railway department to supply the rails at the stipulated time, and in sufficient quantity, which caused a great loss to the contractors.
Railway Construction Act 1884, a line from Mount Moriac to the forest (eleven miles) was authorised; another from Birregurra to the Cape Otway forest (twenty miles); and a third from Ondit road to Beeac, a distance of eight miles: these lines are now in course of construction.

A number of the lines had little social or economic justification, but in the euphoric period of the 1880's boom construction of these lines was pushed ahead.
The Railway Commissioners were seen to be to blame for the extravagances of the 1880's and they were removed from office on this date and their positions abolished.
In addition they were used on main line passenger trains within the state and additional carriages were constructed, based on this design, for use on branch line and mixed trains.

The Pig and Whistle Hotel was established and the railway arrived in 1877, facilitating the expansion of the timber industry with tramways connecting the main line at Garfield to the sawmills and loggers' camps in the Black Snake Ranges to the north.

The West Coast Railway hopes to have No. 996 operational by 2004 so that it can be a part of the celebrations commemorating the 150th anniversary of railways in Victoria.
The railway was closed when I visited but I was able to snap a shot of their two steam locomotives.
