		From the Middle Rio da Serra to the Jiquiá stages the tectonism of the rift phase was intense in pratically all studied basins, with maximum activity registered at the Late Jiquiá time.
		During the Rio da Serra and Aratu local stages the rift of Pelotas, Santos, Campos and Espírito Santo basins was filled with tholeiitic basaltic lavas.
		Sedimentological characteristics point out to a salinity increase of the lacustrine waters from the begining to the end of the rift phase, probably resulting from progressive increase in the aridity conditions.

		The age of its deposits based on palynological material is characteristic of Rio da Serra (Berriasian to Hauterivian) and Aratu (lower Barremian) local stages (Lima and Coelho, 1987; Regali, 1990).
		During the Rio da Serra time (Berriasian to Hauterivian) under the same tectonic stress pattern, the basinal areas increased and its shapes became rhomboidal.
		In the last stage, probably at the end of the Aratu time (Lower Barremian Stage), there was a change in the tectonic pattern and the sediment accumulation began to decline.

		The pre-Cretaceous basement of NE Brazil (Borborema Province) and its adjoining region in Africa (Cameroun Shield) are composed of a patchwork of crystalline and sedimentary rocks, cut into small tectonic units by faults and shear zones.
