The city is surrounded by an environment typical to southern Chile, consisting mostly of coniferous forests in the midst of a central prairie of moraines and cones next to the pre-Andres mountains.
Climatologically, this corresponds to Chile's central valley mediterranean region, with a subtropical weather and transition to humid regions.

Chile: Terror Law Violates Due Process for Mapuche (Human Rights Watch, 27-10-2004)
The Mapuche are accused of plotting to commit a string of arson attacks on woods, fields, homesteads, and vehicles on land under dispute in the Araucanía region of southern Chile.
The fertile land of the Bío Bío and the Araucanía regions, ancestral territory of the Mapuche, is now dotted with commercial pine and eucalyptus plantations, which the Mapuche claim harm the ecosystems on which their traditional life depends.
Chile’s use of terrorism charges for crimes committed in the context of land conflicts, which do not have these characteristics, is inappropriate and reinforces existing prejudices against the Mapuche.

The new code requires a judge to review all detentions within twenty-four hours in a public hearing at which the defendant, his or her defense lawyer, and the prosecutor are present.
During 2004, twelve members of Chile’s largest indigenous community, the Mapuche, as well as a non-Mapuche sympathizer, were tried on terrorism charges for crimes committed in the context of land conflicts with private owners and forestry companies.
The government claimed that arson attacks by Mapuche on farmhouses, woods, and fields in the Araucanía region in southern Chile were orchestrated acts of terrorism, intended to generate fear in the groups affected and to pressure them to abandon their properties.

The tribes of the upper lake region made great use of wild rice, while those of the Ohio Valley made sugar from the sap of the maple, and those of the southern states extracted a nourishing oil from the hickory nut.

In the last thirteen years, Chile has been mentioned as a successful country in leaving behind military authoritarian rule while at the same time exhibiting sound and steady economic growth.
In the 1990s, while many countries in Latin America struggled to meet economic growth with increasing income distribution demands from the poor, Chile managed to reach a proper balance between economic growth and equity, leaving behind military rule, where social justice and income distribution were subordinate to economic goals.
Thus, by investigating a region that lags behind in the midst of a country undergoing economic progress, this research is expected to provide explanations to understand free-market policy’s unsolved paradox of prosperity without equality.

Clubs soon sprung up all around the country, from the elegant Club los Leones and Prince of Wales Country Club, both in Santiago, to the Magallanes Country Club in Punta Arenas, the southernmost golf course in the world.
