Araucaria is a genus of coniferous trees in the family Araucariaceae.
Fossil records show that the genus also formerly occurred in the northern hemisphere until the end of the Cretaceous period.
The genus is named after the Arauco Indians of central Chile whose territory incorporates natural stands of this species, where it is known as the Pehuén.

In its native habitat Araucaria columnaris shows maximum growth and abundance at the edge of the sea, forming dense populations on cliffs exposed to the prevailing winds.
During the Symposium this tree was visited during a day tour and the general consensus was that it is a form of Araucaria cunninghamia - a very distinct form with a glaucus bloom on young seedlings.
The Norfolk Island Araucaria grows on the sides of cliffs as well as on the top areas overlooking the sea on Norfolk Island.

Araucaria comes from 'Araucanos', a tribe in Chile that inhabited the region where the first Araucaria was discovered.
The species name cunninghamii is in honour of Alan Cunningham, 1791­1839, botanist and explorer.
The wood is a pale yellow-brown colour with a fine texture and a straight grain making it useful for furniture, flooring, panelling and, in the past, match sticks and boxes.

The impetus for provenance seed collections of Eucalyptus deglupta Blume and Araucaria cunninghamii Lambert to be made in Irian Jaya, Indonesia, arose from a combined meeting of IUFRO working parties S2.02.8 (Tropical species and provenances) and S2.03.1 (Breeding tropical and sub-tropical species) held in Nairobi, Kenya, October 1973.
The species extends discontinuously from near Milne Bay in the south to near Wutung in the north, which is located in Papua New Guinea near the border with Irian Jaya.
Araucaria is also reported to occur south-east from Babo between the headwaters of the Sjuga-Wasura River from near sea level to 500 m.a.s.l.

I just bought 6 seeds of the Araucaria cunninghamii here in New York City, and I would like to know what the planting procedure for its germination is, regarding depth of seed in soil, scarification (if needed), optimum soil temperature and watering.
As for cunninghamii I only have located one so far, doing real well near Sintra.
The fact is all araucarias here seem to do fine (zones 8,9 and 10) but Sintra is a very speacial place, so the Cunninghamii probably will need that extra moisture...
