    In its native habitat Araucaria columnaris shows maximum growth and abundance at the edge of the sea, forming dense populations on cliffs exposed to the prevailing winds.
    During the Symposium this tree was visited during a day tour and the general consensus was that it is a form of Araucaria cunninghamia - a very distinct form with a glaucus bloom on young seedlings.
    The Norfolk Island Araucaria grows on the sides of cliffs as well as on the top areas overlooking the sea on Norfolk Island.

    From my research on Araucaria araucana it looks like propagation from seed tends to produce plants with wide spacing between the scales and it doesn't look as good as if it is taken from terminal cuttings from a stock plant that has been pruned to multiple leaders.

    heterophylla is pretty common around here and this looks pretty much like the plants I see around town.
    Chad Husby who is finishing up his Ph.D. on Araucariaceae and related families explained to me that the majority of trees called A. heterophylla are actually A. columnaris.
    A. heterophylla has a much more open profile with stiffer branches, whereas A. columnaris has a narrower profile and more lax branches.
