		He conducted in person the war against the Visigoths under Fritigern (in Macedonia and Epirus), and on one occasion was nearly betrayed into the enemy's hands; this campaign, in which Gratian's general Arbogast eventually lent help, was ended by Fritigern's death.

		Following the mysterious death of Valentinian II, the general Arbogast[?] was forced to save his life by elevating the administrator Eugenius to emperor.
		Theodosius eventually confronted this rebellion, invading Italy and defeating Eugenius' army at the Battle of Frigidius[?] on September 6, 394.
		Arbogast immediately committed suicide after the defeat, while Eugenius was held for execution as a criminal.
