MBTA bus on the Arborway near Forest Hills Station
The area where the path from the MBTA station and the path from Washington St. meet is inviting, well-lit, and carefully landscaped.
This intersection represents a break in the continuity of the Emerald Necklace despite landscaping at the Forest Hills MBTA Station and the Southwest Corridor Park.

 MBTA Bus Roster
Arborway is receiving the first 112, followed by Cabot with the remaining 181 buses.
They will be ETB from South Station to the Boston World Trade Center and diesel the rest of the way to Logan Airport, City Point, and the Marine Industrial Park.
The T did not like the buses due to difficult maintenance according to MBTA mechanics and speculation that they would not be able to handle rush-hour loads.

 Arborway Yard Agreement
In keeping with the MBTA's continued commitment to be responsive to community concerns, which has included, but not limited to transfer of a minimum of 8.0 acres of real estate, the MBTA shall implement and maintain the highest standard for responsiveness to community concerns on all aspects of the operations of the Transit Facility.
The MBTA is transferring this land with the understanding that it is necessary to satisfy community priorities and mitigate the impact of the Facility.
As part of this standard, the MBTA will continue to meet with and report to community members on a regular basis, shall publicize the name and telephone number of the superintendent of the facility, and shall respond and act to resolve all reasonable community concerns on a prompt basis.

 Articles - MBTA nomenclature
Silver Line: Dudley Square - Downtown Crossing; South Station - various points ---- List - Crosstown buses - Former streetcars - Trackless trolleys - Key routes - East Boston area - South Boston - Urban Ring
The Middlesex and Boston Street Railway buses were subsidized by the MBTA in September 1964, and they were assigned numbers from 20 to 36 (extended to 39 in November 1967, on the takeover of routes from Transit Bus Lines), duplicating existing MBTA numbers.
Some in the Melrose area were renumbered from 131 to 135 when they were moved to existing MBTA garages in March 1969.

 MBTA SILVERLINE
MBTA covers a large part of the state, extending west to Worcester and south all the way to Providence, Rhode Island.
MBTA is still using the old token system on the subway, and using passes on the buses.
MBTA has made a big commitment to serving the riding and non-riding public with new state-of-the-art facilities, expanded service and environmentally friendly vehicles.

Update for January 11, 2003: The next ARRPAC working session will be on January 15th at the State Lab building, 305 South St, 7-9 pm.
According to the decision, the MBTA does not have to undertake a new study of alternatives to Green Line restoration, and the MBTA's request for filing a single Environmental Impact Report (EIR) is approved.
MBTA officials involved in the design process have periodically made reference to resuming meetings "soon", but so far this has not transpired.

There is no greater example of the effects of this neglect than the quarter-mile stretch of the Arborway from Forest Hills Street to Washington Street, which has been adversely affected by the Casey Overpass, the Forest Hills MBTA Station, the District Courthouse parking, and potentially by this proposed development.
This will enable the proponent to increase the landscaping and setback to the existing 500 Arborway site to approximately 50 ft. The MBTA should consult with the MDC and the Department of Environmental Management (DEM) on how to landscape this area along the Arborway to be consistent with landscaping along this historic parkway.
The Arborway is an integral component of the Emerald Necklace Park system, a significant cultural landscape that reflects the genius and vision of Frederick Law Olmsted, America’s preeminent landscape architect.

 T Watch
The MBTA is under mandate from the Department of Environmental Protection to restore trolley service along the former Arborway line between Heath Street and the Arborway Station, a 2 mile run.
One would think that the MBTA would rush to action and see to it that simple, easy to use defibrillator devices are installed on each train and that train personnel are adequately schooled in common sense (although we understand this is a difficult field of study).
The MBTA knows better, evidenced by all their other successes, such as clean facilities, and rapid, on-time transit services, so they are plowing ahead with the next "phase", tunneling under the Fort Point Channel.

 Arborway Committee - Documents
Still, other cities see an MBTA station as a lifeline.
MBTA rail service to New Bedford and Fall River is in the planning stage, and additional South Shore service is scheduled to begin in 2005, to Braintree, Weymouth, Hingham, Cohasset, and Scituate.
But today, less than two decades after the MBTA's Red Line arrived, the district is transformed, a bustling center that rivals Harvard Square.

 Summer Biking Excursions
Liability: A waiver indemnifying and releasing the MBTA from all injury, loss, and/or damage involving any bicycle brought into station areas and aboard trains must be signed by each permit applicant.
Another choice would be to get a MBTA bike pass and take the Lowell Commuter rail to the Winchester stop and then head a short distance due west towards the forested hills.
Note that you will need an MBTA bike pass to bring your bicycle onto the commuter rail trains (there are special areas on the cars for your bikes).

 MBTA
By the end of this year, the MBTA was also supposed to have lengthened Blue Line platforms and modernized the line's stations so that six-car trains could run instead of four-car trains.
Though the discrepancy between the permit's demands and the MBTA's actions is part of the lawsuit, the DEP draft agreement dismisses the issue.
Its draft decision asks the MBTA for a quantitative comparison of the clean-air benefits of the original and new proposals, and again asks the agency to make up somehow for the years we've been kept waiting.

 Arborway Committee - Documents
MBTA officials refused requests to discuss the matter of Arborway restoration or any alternatives at that meeting.
The omission of the cost of the CNG facility at the Arborway Yard is made all the more insupportable by the fact that EOTC does attribute to Green Line Arborway Restoration the $4.55 million cost of a light rail facility at the same location.
It is the view of the Arborway Committee that EOTC in its January 1999 submittal to DEP has not demonstrated that the "specific project listed" is infeasible.

The Trolley Museum Collection, MBTA Cars
From then to the end of service in South Boston in 1953, the cars were restricted to the Dudley Line, and some migrated to Arborway.
During the mid fifties the fleet was split between Arborway and Bennett St. with many of the Bennett St. cars winding up at Mattapan, while the Arborway cars served the Tremont St. line.
They were the mainstay of the Andrew-Dudley and Broadway-North Station lines until the Broadway Bridge was condemned in the early 1950s.

Heath Street (MBTA station) - Definition, explanation
The station is accessible when served by the MBTA's newer low-floor trolley cars and buses.
Pursuant to environmental mitigation commitments made by the state regarding the Central Artery/Tunnel Project (BigDig), service south of Heath Street is supposed to resume as soon as the tracks and overhead wiring are reconstructed and a sufficient number of low-floor streetcars are available to operate the service.
Many believe the MBTA is trying to back out of this commitment and the Conservation Law Foundation is planning legal action to enforce the agreement.

Ashley Lanfer: Urban Places of the Heart
As vacant lots and abandoned buildings are rehabbed, and as progress is made on the Boston State Hospital site, as well as the Arborway transit yard near the Forest Hills station, and the Arborway itself that extends from Jamaica Pond to Franklin Park, there are opportunities aplenty to build on the best of the neighborhoods.
Within a mile and a half radius of the Forest Hills MBTA station, there are more than 1,570 acres of public open space, not including several cemeteries.
The Boston Society of Architects has drawn attention to the area's potential for housing development near the Forest Hills station.

The Future MBTA - Green Line
Park St. and Boylston St. stations were the first subway stations in the nation, built in 1897 to alleviate trolley traffic on Tremont St. Since then it has grown and fanned out to be the largest of all the lines.
I don't support this because I believe that the section from South Station to the airport should stay BRT because it would require building a new tunnel parallel to the Ted Williams if it was to be converted to light rail.
The MBTA doesn't like this idea, along with many city officials and for a long time has tried to replace the street running with busses.

 NETransit: MBTA 3418 Fantrip
Brigham Circle station, another LRV haunt for many years while the Arborway line was closed and the PCC cars were out of service.
The MBTA has been running Beacon Street service with solely LRVs for some time now, and this seems to show that the MBTA has enough faith in the modified cars that they will trust them to provide base service on at least one route.
The other cars were, 3415, 3416, and 3421, and a quick check of the MBTA LRV inventory will show that all four of these cars have survived to this point - though 3418 and 3421 were not rehabbed, and are presently out of service.
