Cocktail cabinets are shaped like low, rectangular tables, with the controls usually set at either of the longer ends, or, not as common, at the short ends, and the monitor inside the table, the screen facing upward.
Some cabinets are constructed entirely by hobbyists to mimic an arcade cabinet using emulators such as MAME and a PC to replace the game hardware.
These home built cabinets have many of the features of real arcade cabinets (such as a coin box, marquees etc.), often a MAME arcade unit combines several arcade controls (such as two types of joysticks and a trackball) in one unit to enable play of many different games.

The cabinet itself is an original Atari Klax arcade cabinet built in 1995.
When I bought the cabinet it was gutted - no electronics, a broken monitor, and a marquee light that came apart upon touch - and smelled like, well, nothing you'd like to have in your livingroom (probably having been in an ill-ventilated pub for 10 years or so).

What this cabinet lacks in craftsmanship, finish and having a panel with every known controller it hopefully makes up for in ease of construction, reasonable cost, retro feel and usability.

The Cabinet is an old Mortal Kombat II Cabinet, it was cool, it even had a sliding shelf for the keyboard to rest on, which is handy for any small mame adjustments.

I've been having some trouble with the cabinet crashing and rebooting unexpectedly, and I have a feeling the bargain-basement ram/motherboard are probably responsible, but I don't have the time/patience/money to really get in there and fix it.
Swapped out the tv in my cabinet with another one (it was the living room tv until recently), and I can't believe the difference.
Both play very well with arcade controls, but Gish requires a modified exe (which they said they'll make available soon) to make the GUI system work without a full keyboard or mouse.

Another thing that is possible on a cabinet, that isn't on a keyboard (and this is a major consideration for me) is multiple player games.
One other cabinet has a rotating monitor that I know of, but that is a cocktail cabinet, and involves lifting and manually spinning the montior.
Mine is the first stand-up cabinet that I know of, and also the first cabinet to have an easily rotating Wheel Of Fortune style frame.

An arcade distributor does nothing but sell / lease / repair arcade games, and has a nice big truck to deliver them in.

My arcade cabinet is based upon a second-hand gutted cabinet shell which I subsequently converted for use with MAME.
Not only does this cabinet offer the flexibility to play classics such as PacMan, Asteroids, Donkey Kong, Space Invaders, Arkanoid and Defender but it also doubles as a great music jukebox.

The game station’s “marquee” is made of the same material as the rest of the cabinet and the artwork is simply a sticker applied to the surface.

I ran across this emulator that could run all the old arcade games I used to collect.
After playing some games (grin) and searching the web for a while I realized this was just something I had to build.
Many of the ideas come from many web sites and I picked and merged the ones I liked plus some of my own… and of course with some input from Matt and Greg such as “it needs to be 4 players” so they could play with their friends.

I was inspired to finally go ahead and create the MAME cabinet I had been dreaming about for a good 6 months after floating around town one day and coming across an Amusement Supply business of sorts (which was only available by appointment, apparently).
It took me a few days to find a place that would even talk to me about selling arcade cabinets, which is all I was looking for.
I found a few really cool but impractical cabinets, but came across a working game of Atari's Klax - it's funny, but that was maybe one of the last games I played while exiting my arcade phase - near the Tetris era, early 90's...
