Arcelor S.A. Euronext: LOR) is the world's largest steel producer in terms of turnover and the second largest in terms of steel output, with a turnover of 30.2 billion euros and shipments of 45 million metric tons of steel in 2004.
In January 2006 Arcelor announced the acquisition of Dofasco, Canadas largest steel producer with an annual output of 4.4 million tons.
The company was the target of a takeover bid by its rival Mittal Steel on 27 January 2006.

European steel giant Arcelor SA is buying a controlling stake in Brazil's second largest steel producer for $578.5 million in cash and is on the prowl to purchase other companies in the developing world, the Luxembourg-based company said Monday.
Arcelor, the world's largest steel producer by tonnage, expects the deal to be completed in the second half of 2005 pending regulatory approval.
Arcelor has also mounted a bid with Russia's number-two steel maker OAO Severstal to acquire Ukrainian steel producer OAO Kryvorizhstal, which is scheduled to be privatized.
