The arch commemorates the Sergii family, specifically Lucius Sergius Lepidus, a tribune serving in the twenty-ninth legion that participated in the Battle of Actium and disbanded in 27 BC.
The honorary triumphal arch was permitted by the town of Pula and paid for by the wife of Lepidus, Salvia Postuma.

The Arch of Sergi, or the Triumphal Arch of Sergius (Slavoluk obitelji Sergijevaca), was built in the 1st Century BC under the direction of Salvia Postuma Sergia.
It stands as a monument to three Sergi family members who fought and died in a battle between the Octavian led Roman fleet and the Egyptian-Roman fleet of Mark Antony and Cleopatra.
