Archaeogastropoda - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Archaeogastropoda is a traditional order of primitive marine gastropods.
Archaeogastropods typically have two gills and usually a double chambered heart.
Archaeogastropoda is a paraphyletic group, and in strictly cladistic classifications, the occurrence of such groups is no longer accepted.

Abstract: The Cirroidea are defined by their mode of coiling which is dextral in the initial whorls and sinistral and, less commonly, planispiral in the later whorls of the teleoconch.
During the revision of slit bearing archaeogastropods from the Lower Devonian of Bohemia and the Lower Carboniferous of Belgium the presence of species belonging to the new genus Balbinipleura from the selenimorph group Bembexia was noted and the two new species B.
A coherent place in the taxonomic system is presented for the Archaeogastropoda which is based mainly on features of the ontogeny of the shell and can also be detected on a fossil.

All members of the Order Archaeogastropoda come from a single ancestral form.
Members of Archaeogastropoda have rhipidoglossate radulae consisting of numerous rows of teeth.
Archaeogastropoda is a large poorly defined group whose members possess one or two ctenida in their anterior mantle cavity.

They are now included in the infraorder Neoogastropoda Cox, 1960.
A more detailed account about the discussion on the taxonomy of the Gastropoda is given in Gastropoda, Archaeogastropoda and Mesogastropoda.
They evolved in a much later stage than the Archaegastropoda and the Mesogastropoda.

 The Ear-like Shell of Abalone
There is not much known about the origin of these holes, but the snails seem to use the front most holes to put tentacles through them, and the older ones to get rid of their waste water.
Like the limpets (Patellidae), abalones (Haliotidae) belong to the Order of Diotocardia or Archaeogastropoda, which is the group of the most primitive snails that occur today.
What is unusual among contemporary gastropods: These primeval snails still have mother-of-pearl as an inner structure of their shells.

The progenetic digenea Proctoeces lintoni Siddiqi & Cable, 1960 (Fellodistomidae) is a common parasite in the gonads of key-hole limpets of the genus Fissurella (Archaeogastropoda).
This helminth causes partial castration in Fissurella crassa (ME Oliva 1992 Mem Inst Oswaldo Cruz 87: 34-42) and fecundity (expressed as egg/mm shell) of infected individuals is dramatically reduced when intensity of infection increases (ME Oliva & AA Vega 1994 Mem Inst Oswaldo Cruz 89: 225).

Thus, an increasing number of biologists, prefer to use prosobranch as a descriptive term, rather than as the name of a taxon.
Some workers restrict the archaeogastropods to the Pleurotomarioidea, Fissurelloidea, and Trochoidea, excluding the Cocculiniformia, and Patellogastropoda, others prefer the name Vetigastropoda for this group, to avoid confusion between a narrowly and a broadly defined Archaeogastropoda.
As shown in an evolutionary tree, there are many different major lineages of gastropods.

The term "archaeo" (from "archaeogastropoda") means ancient, or primitive.
Abalone are the most primitive group of molluscs, and they have changed little since their ancestors first originated during the Cambrian period (over 500 million years ago!).

Olympus MIC-D: Pond Life Digital Movie Gallery - Aquatic Snail (Gastropoda) Movie #2
The class Gastropoda in the phylum Mollusca includes the snails and slugs, encompassing many freshwater and marine species.
Freshwater species are largely in the order Archaeogastropoda, within the subclass Prosobranchia, and feature an operculum and usually a spiral, coiled shell.
Torsion is the developmental process that results in the rotation of the mantle and organs of the snail on its foot, creating the unusual and potentially undesirable positioning of the anus adjacent to the head and mouth.

Traditionally the class was divided into the subclasses Prosobranchia, Opisthobranchia, and Pulmonata, but it is now clear that prosobranchs are an ancestral, paraphyletic grade from which the other groups evolved.
The prosobranchs themselves were similarly divided into the orders Archaeogastropoda, Mesogastropoda and Neogastropoda, but recent work shows these also to be para- and polyphyletic.
