Buddhist Channel | Archaeology | India: Seepage in Ajanta worries Archaeological Survey of India
Since then, whenever it rains, at least 10 of the 30 important caves leak, forcing the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) staff to keep utensils and buckets beneath the leakage points to collect the rain water.
An Archaeological Survey of India team, led by deputy superintending archeologist Manager Singh, has been hunting out the leakage points to provide a clear path for the water to fall into buckets through previously filleted points.
While Archaeological Survey of India had approached the Geological Survey of India (GSI) officials for assistance, GSI experts, after several visits to the caves suggested that contour drains be constructed on top of the mountains featuring precious caves.

And, India now represents a unique `unity in diversity.' There are different cultures, different languages, different climates and different geographical features and on the basis of some of these differences, India has been divided into a large number of states and union territories.
In addition to cultural diversity, the enormous size of India also ensures a great deal of variation in geographical, climatic and ecological conditions : from the heights of the majestic Himalayas, to the unexplored to the east windswept beaches in the south and the silent desert in the west.
India offers itself as a fascinating tourist destination in its cultural and archaeological attractions, its leisure, adventure and sporting pleasures, its religious shrines, its attractive convention facilities, and for a host of other reasons.

Inspite of such early discovery, the usual neglect that goes with the erstwhile rulers towards Dravidian culture and civilisation is responsible for the failure of the Archaeological Survey of India to acquire the site, to fence it and to continue the excavation deeper.

Fears that the Taj Mahal’s minarets are tilting dangerously and its base sinking on one side have been dismissed by the Archaeological Survey of India, which says it has not detected any structural damage at the base for the past six decades.
But the four Taj minarets were observed to be inclined at various angles by the Archaeological Survey of India’s (ASI’s) first scientific survey in 1941, which examined the position and verticality of the minarets as well as the foundations' stability.
The most recent survey on the Taj was done by ASI and Survey of India in 2000-2001 and found no structural changes.
