Archaeological science (also known as Archaeometry) is the application of scientific techniques and methodologies to archaeology.
The use of remote sensing has enabled archaeologists to identify many more archaeological sites than would otherwise have been possible.
The use of aerial photography remains the most wide-spread remote sensing technique, but this has been supplemented by the use of satellite imagery, especially with the declassification of images from millitary satelites.

NSF Grant to Establish Archaeological Science Program at University of Arizona   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a major grant to the University of Arizona in Tucson to train students how to incorporate a range of scientific disciplines related to their research in archaeological science, the first major program of its kind in the United States.
Narrow training in a particular field of science is not adequate preparation for archaeometry (instrument techniques used in archaeological analysis, such as dating), and many studies by competent scientists have been justifiably criticized for failing to address questions of archaeological significance, Olsen says.
A third hallmark of the grant is that each year, two science teachers from local middle schools or high schools will also work in summer internship programs, learning ways to add depth to their classroom activities by studying how social sciences and lab sciences articulate with one another.

Archaeological science, however, is seen as a specialist area, for which there are fewer potential researchers each of whom is therefore funded at a slightly higher than usual level to reflect the higher cost of laboratory provision.
For other branches of archaeological science some opportunities exist in specialist research laboratories such as those of the British Museum, and in laboratories such as those of English Heritage and some of the larger excavation units.
