Intensive archaeological exploration of the area continues to this day, but beyond cursory acknowledgements in the archaeological reports of the employment of local workmen, and beyond persistent allegations of illicit antiquities dealings in popular and fictional archaeological writing, little published information exists which focuses on the contemporary social perspectives of the surrounding archaeological landscape.
The presence of politically motivated concerns in archaeological practice is not a new phenomenon: the politicisation of archaeological discourse developed alongside the discipline itself (Silberman, 1989:1-11), with politically oriented interpretations of the archaeological past serving the maintenance of the status quo by reference to that past.
To the extent that tourism revenues are seen as contributing to the upkeep and legitimisation of incumbent governments, attacks on the tourist industry by Islamic extremists were a clear means towards attempts at overthrowing the government.

 Tourism Policy
In 1991, the State did declare a tourism policy but it did not elicit adequate response from the private sector since the policy contained only a handful of benefits while the implementation was tardy due to legal and administrative constraints.
While other state Governments made successful efforts in developing tourism within their states, the relative inability of the Gujarat State to harness and develop its full tourist potential may be attributed to a combination of factors such as lack of effective policies, inadequate infrastructure, ineffective marketing and lack of decent facilities for the tourists.
The tourism will be given the status of industry in order that the facilities and benefits available to the industry are also made available to tourism projects.

In the sports tourism sector, an on-going project for the enlargement of the training centre at the village of Kalathos on Rhodes is financed from resources of the South Aegean ROP 2000-2006, and a number of smaller projects are underway in all the islands, financed with national resources and specifically from the "Greece 2004" programme.

Empire should be commended for their ability to identify something of archaeological significance, and then to go the extra mile to have the resource professionally identified and protected, until an archaeologist could excavate the feature to recover the important information that it held.

STEPPING up its efforts to promote Karnataka as an ideal destination, the Tourism Department has embarked upon a project to prepare an archaeological directory and a tourism gazette to compile the important monuments and places of interest that could be projected as tourist spots to visitors from both within the country and abroad.
The archaeological directory will consist of 1,360 declared monuments, out of the estimated 20,000 monuments in the State and will highlight their importance and brief background.
A similar programme is being planned in Mysore later this month as part of a package to tourists so that their sojourn does not become monotonous with the visit to the places of interest.
