Archant, the UK's fifth largest regional newspaper group, is believed to be interested in acquiring Trinity Mirror's newspapers in London and the south-east.
Archant said it was not company policy to comment on specific deals but was looking to build its business in the south-east.
Archant has signalled a recovery in regional papers, reporting a large rise in pre-tax profits in the first half of 2007.
