That Liverpool could not be closed to traffic by Submarine warfare alone had been apparent as early as 1940, and now growing rapidly more and more desperate, the Fuhrer decided to implement Raeder’s suggestion and hurl the full fury of the Luftwaffe into a determined effort in putting the port of Liverpool out of commission.
Liverpool Cathedral had a narrow escape when a high explosive bomb pierced the roof only to be deflected outwards by the central beam of the Transept, exploding high in the air above the street, destroying many of the stain glassed windows including the large Derby Memorial Transept window.
Liverpool had lost forever some of its finest buildings, the docks where the Luftwaffe had done its worst lay in ruins, but in the ensuing weeks these along with the railway and other essential lines of communication were almost if not quite back to normal.

Traces of this connexion are seen in the old St. Patrick's Cross of Liverpool which was supposed to mark the spot where St.
Patrick preached before sailing to Ireland, and in the pre-Reformation chalice still preserved at Fernyhalgh, near Preston, which bears the date of 1529 and an inscription testifying that it was given by "Dosius Maguire, Chieftain of Fermanagh".

With the gradual abolition of the legal restrictions on the activities of Catholics in England and Wales in the early 19th century, Rome decided to proceed to bridge the gap of the centuries from Queen Elizabeth I by instituting Catholic dioceses on the regular historical pattern.
The see is in the City of Liverpool, where the Archbishop's cathedra or seat is located in the Metropolitan Cathedral Church of Christ the King, which was dedicated on 14 May 1967.

The most important factor in Sheppard's ministry on Merseyside was his close co-operation with Derek Worlock, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Liverpool.
David Stuart Sheppard was born on March 6 1929, the son of a London solicitor and a cousin of "Tubby" Clayton, the founder of Toc H. Although his father died when David was eight, he inspired the boy with a love of cricket, taking him to watch Sussex at Hove.

The Most Reverend Patrick Kelly, Archbishop of Liverpool and Vice-President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, today met His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan.
The Archbishop was in Jordan for the 2006 meeting of the Co-ordination of Episcopal Conferences in Support of the Church of the Holy Land.
The overall aim of the Co-ordination is to act in solidarity with the Christian community in the Holy Land, through the Assembly of Catholic Ordinaries of the Holy Land, and to share in the pastoral life of the local Church as it experiences intense political and social-economic pressure.

Pope John Paul II visited Liverpool in May 1982 on his first papal tour of Britain, attending services at both the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Anglican Cathedral in keeping the spirit of ecumenicalism which was prevalent in the city at the time.
Speaking about the popes visit to Liverpool in 1982 Lord Mayor of Liverpool Councillor Frank Roderick said "The whole of the city irrespective of faith embraced his visit and it was one of the great days in the life of this city."

Archbishop Kelly was born in Morecambe, Lancashire 23 November 1938, ordained at the English College, Rome on 18 February 1962, ordained Bishop of Salford on 3 April 1984 and installed as Archbishop and Metropolitan on 3 July 1996.
At 10:00 am on Monday 29 May, Archbishop Kelly will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving in the University Chapel to which all faculty, staff and students are invited followed by a Dialogue with faculty, staff and students of Bethlehem University.
