A joint statement by the Archdiocese of Southwark and Diocese of Northampton said: "The Most Reverend Michael Bowen, Archbishop of Southwark, has announced his retirement and the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, has accepted his resignation on 6 November 2003.
Southwark is one of the largest dioceses in the country, comprising Greater London south of the Thames, as well as the County of Kent.
The Archdiocese of Southwark, of course, is completely new to me but I look forward to the challenge that it presents to me. I am aware, for example, of the very multi-cultural nature of many of the south London parishes.

The Archbishop, who is seriously ill, decided at a late stage to come to Britain for the end of the Celebrate South Africa festival and to return to the Cathedral where he launched the appeal for funding in April 1999.
The Dean of Southwark, the Very Rev Colin Slee, presented him with a cheque for £6,300 which was taken in the collection when Dr Mandela opened the Millennium development on April 28.

Statement from The Bishop of Southwark on the Archbishop of Canterbury’s ruling in the case of The Revd Richard Coekin’s appeal on the revocation of his Licence.
The Archbishop's report further emphasises that if Mr Coekin is to exercise licensed ministry in the Church of England he must "conform to the discipline of the Church." and "must submit to the Bishop of Southwark's episcopal authority."

He was ordered to appear before Southwark Crown Court on 27 April to answer the new charge, which was only able to be tried in a Crown Court.
The pre-trial hearing was set for 25 May at Southwark Crown Court, and the CPS refused to withdraw the charge when asked to by the defence in light of the screening of the Channel 4 documentary 'My Foetus'.
On 24 May the defence applied to the Crown Court for an adjournment so that an application could be made to the Attorney General to have the prosecution halted, and this was granted with a new date set for the hearing of 11 June.

Michael Bowen, the Archbishop of Southwark, issued a public apology to the victims following the 1995 court case, admitting that, with the benefit of hindsight, it had been a mistake by the diocese to make Gallagher a parish priest, following his child sex conviction.
The Derry victims are now sueing both Gallagher and Archbishop Bowen, in his role as head of diocese.
Ironically, Archbishop Bowen, 74, is set to formally retire only days after the case is due to be heard.

The Bishop of Southwark and those clergy who agree with him in protesting about the ordinations in Surbiton all seem to be pointing to one issue-- that church plants have happened out of line with Diocesan guidelines.
It is because the liberalism within the Southwark diocese has strayed so far from Biblical truth, that the moment someone contents for the gospel, the contrast in the two approaches is highlighted to such a significant extent.
The issue in Southwark was that proper collaboration was not going on, and unfortunately there is evidence of the church plants in question having a negative effect on existing congregations, which I am sure you would agree is unfortunate.
