Background - Archdeaconry Resources - Manuscripts & Special Collections - The University of Nottingham
In the Church of England, an archdeaconry is a tier of ecclesiastical administration below the level of a diocese.
During their most active period, from the 16th to the end of the 18th centuries, ordinary people were subject to the control and influence of archdeaconry courts in a number of ways.
Archdeaconry courts could also be used to settle grievances including allegations of defamation, non-payment of tithes, and disputes over probate and matrimonial matters.

GENUKI: Norfolk: Genealogy: Church: Records: Administration Areas
The Archdeaconry of Suffolk was retained until about 1914 when all of it (except the Deanery of Lothingland) became part of the newly created diocese of St. Edmundsbury and Ipswich.
Each diocese was split further into Archdeaconries (overseen by an Archdeacon) and Peculiars (normally answerable directly to the Bishop or his representative) all of which held their own courts.
Archdeaconries did not cover specific areas of the county, such as east and west, but rather a number of groups of parishes (as will be seen later).
