Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria (Wiener Neustadt January 5, 1614 -Vienna November 20, 1662), was a Governor of the Spanish Netherlands, a military commander in the service of Spain, and a patron of the arts.
He is also known as Leopold Wilhelm von Habsburg but as a son of the Emperor carried the title Archduke of Austria.
When he assumed the government of the Spanish Netherlands, Leopold Wilhelm, being a great lover of art, employed the great Flemish painter David Teniers the Younger not only as a painter but as keeper of the collection of pictures he was then forming.

In 1646 Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria was appointed Governor of the Low Countries and took up residence at the Coudenberg Palace in Brussels.
In 1651 Teniers was appointed court painter and curator of the Archduke's gallery.
It is not difficult to identify these masterpieces, which the Archduke took with him to Vienna when he left Brussels in 1656, as Teniers was careful to indicate the artist on each picture frame.

It is very likely that during his stay in Rome (around 1648-1649) Kerll studied with Johann Jakob Froberger, who was living in the city at the time, but no firm evidence was found to prove this.
In approximately 1646-1647 Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria, by then the governor of the Spanish Netherlands, appointed Johann Kaspar Kerl as a chamber organist for the new residental palace in Brussels.
In 1655 the Brusseles court broke up and in February 1656 Johann Kaspar Kerl accepted a temporary post of Vice-Kappelmeister at the Munich court, Elector Ferdinand Maria was his employer.
