Three rocky structures with elaborate carvings of animals have emerged near the coastal town of Mahabalipuram, battered by the Dec. 26 Asian tsunami.

KOLKATA - India's bustling eastern metropolis, which in 1990 celebrated the 300th year of its founding by British colonialists with much fanfare, is looking for a new birthday as a result of recent archeological finds that push its history back two millennia, and the findings of a court committee on the matter.
Archeologists excavating the northern outskirts of the city at the mouth of the sacred Ganges river have dug up artefacts and "habitational deposits" that are believed to be the remains of an urban settlement dating back to the 2nd century BC.
The Archeological Survey of India (ASI), which is excavating the site near the Dum Dum neighborhood, says that the artefacts and potsherds appear to be from the Sunga Kusana period which ruled the region about 2,200 years ago.

He believes that Jews migrated from northern India, perhaps Afghanistan or the North-East Frontier region (Manipur, Mizoram) sometime during the 9th or 10th centuries C.E., and settled around the area of Nandial in what were at that time nascent Telugu-speaking areas.

Archeologists in India say they have excavated one of the world's tallest Buddhist stupas in the eastern state of Bihar.
The director of the Archaeological Survey of India in Bihar, K K Mohammed, said the stupa was originally 38 metres (123 feet) high, but collapsed during an earthquake in the state in 1934.
The Archeological Survey of India said it has sought permission to develop the area as a tourist attraction since it is located between the two key Buddhist pilgrimage destinations - Vaishali and Kushinagar.

According to Dr. G.S. Khwaja of the Archeological Survey of India, some missionaries led by Maalik Bin Dinaar, a Sufi saint from Basra and a contemporary of the prophet came to Kerala in the seventh Century.
Khwaja's paper says the grave of Maalik Bin Dinaar's son, who was appointed the Kazi of the town to act as the judicial magistrate, registrar of marriages and counsellor on marriage of inheritance, still exists in the compound of the mosques at Kasargod, which was mentioned in the lintel epigraph as Kancherkoth.
The paper says according to legends the earliest mosques in Kerala, perhaps in India itself, was at Kodangallor, but the only epigraphical evidence of the Muslims' first arrival was at Kasargod nearby.

I have the same feelings for India today: 95 per cent is good, but there are some aspects that I am still not able to swallow, even after all these years.
To my knowledge, India must be the only nation in the world implementing these separate rates.
India is today a great power; technological advancements have occurred in the world during the past decades and will undoubtedly continue to occur and India has no choice but to accept them and make the best use of them.

NEW DELHI, Feb 14 (SANA): After taking up construction of roads, parliament, schools, hospitals and training policemen for Afghanistan, India is helping Kabul in raising a posse of archaeologists to restore the cultural heritage that Taliban destroyed during over a decade of its rule.
A multi-member team having representation from National Archives, Archeological Survey of India (ASI) and National Museum have visited Kabul twice in the recent months to work out the modalities for the restoration of Afghan monuments and look at the possibilities of rediscovering common cultural heritage between the two countries.
UNESCO has suggested to Afghan government prevention of illicit excavations from archeological sites, training of professional cadres in archaeology, museuology, restoration of historical monuments and the international community in returning the looted heritage.

NEW DELHI: In a report likely to bolster a sometimes violent Hindu nationalist campaign to build a temple at the site of a 16th-century mosque, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) said last week it has found evidence that a structure resembling an ancient Hindu temple may lie under the mosque.
The Archaeological Survey was ordered to excavate the site by the high court in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
