Archers of Loaf - Biography - AOL Music
The Archers of Loaf were darlings of the indie world in the early to mid-'90s, thanks to an off-kilter sound that was edgy and challenging, yet melodically accessible at the same time.
The Archers became a hip name to drop with their acclaimed 1993 debut, Icky Mettle; several more accomplished albums followed before the group called it quits in 1998.
The Archers of Loaf were formed in Chapel Hill in 1991, when all four members were attending the University of North Carolina.

Robert Christgau: GGGB: Archers of Loaf
Without benefit of roadies or hangers-on, the Archers of Loaf had been traveling in a Ryder truck and a rent-a-car ever since Seattle, where their faithful $5000 van blew a camshaft three dates into the Weezer sector of a three-month tour that will end along with its Flaming Lips sector on May 20.
Although the Archers are often described as a cross between Superchunk and Pavement, the Superchunk connection is mostly regional--the Archers are from Asheville via Chapel Hill and have ties to the indie purists' Merge label.
The Archers, all 25 or less, won't always enjoy making albums on the cheap any more than they'll always enjoy sleeping on floors, and the hope is that they'll gather the audience support they deserve fast enough to pay for any newfound needs without going into hock with a major.

The Archers of Loaf, he contends, never set out to write so many songs about transportation, but it has definitely been a recurring theme as of late.

 Archers loaf, Paleface grapples lyrically
Archers of Loaf is capable of structuring wonderful pop ditties and more than capable of tearing down the structure of the typical hard rock song into a heap of static layered with buzz-saw guitars.
On its major-label debut, Archers of Loaf further falls into that niche between Pavement and the Flaming Lips.
However, Archers of Loaf is neither as corny and fun as Pavement, nor as wildly cartoonish and devilishly wacky as the Flaming Lips.

The Archers of Loaf burst onto the indie/college scene in 1993 with the electric "Icky Mettle", receiving critical praise for their efforts.

It appears the Archers of Loaf have reached commercial success as they have just released a compilation of rarities, B-sides, 7" singles, alternate versions and previously unreleased tracks.
This will surely please the occasional Loaf partaker, but die hard fans may not be quite so excited, as a compilation album such as this eliminates the thrill of the hunt: the never-ending search for that one impossible to find track which none of your friends even know of.
For anyone with an appetite for loud guitars, loud drums and loud vocals, The Archers of Loaf just may be their savior in the guise of four somewhat wild guys with musical instruments sewn into their being.

The Archers have set themselves apart from the masses musically by displaying a distinctive style in their songwriting; they maintain their unmistakable sound while continually exploring new territory, especially with their last release "White Trash Heroes".
The Archers also included some of their quietest songs to date with the poignant "Chumming the Oceans" and the murky, dreamy lament "Form and File".
Spin noted "The Archers are champions of the day after R.E.M. and Sonic Youth's tomorrow...they play folk-noise punk that's a relief from the secondhand doom, tissue paper sexiness, and wooden rage all around them." A great band was growing and changing within their own sound.

Although the twin-guitar attack of Eric Bachmann and Eric Johnson remains prominent, the Archers bring analog synths and scattered sampling to a mix that seems apt in the post-OK Computer era.
Bachmann does deliver an inspired tale of the downtrodden with "After the Last." The song -- a blend of angular guitar dissonance, synths, and an a cappella chorus -- showcases him at his best, chronicling the poetics of misery, and of the down and out.

Archers of Loaf -- "White Trash Heros"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
The indie misfits Archers of Loaf continue to dredge their sonic deconstruction.
They have the dissonance of Sonic Youth, the cock-eyed drawl of Pavement, the marauding intonation of Richard Butler, the cranky minor chords of Dinosaur Jr, the crank of Stabbing Westward -- yet manage to not be derivative. Some songs collapse under their own weight, more chaos than insight.
But when the Archers strike hot, as on "Fashion Bleeds" and the title track, their grinding yet sparse, insistent yet cold tunes speak a wary, dark alley sense of apocalyptic doom.

Archers of Loaf is one of the bands from “America’s heartland”–in its case, North Carolina–that is keeping the fires of raw punk rock/rock & roll burning.
Two guitars, bass, and drums, complete with a singer that sounds like he’s worn his voice down singing/shouting along to the early Replacements, Husker Du, and Sugar records.
